Hands-onSSX Tricky GameCube
We play the GameCube version of EA Sports Big's arcade-influenced snowboarding game.
SSX was one of the more popular PlayStation 2 launch games due to its impressive graphics and its refreshingly unique gameplay. But its semi-sequel, SSX Tricky, is looking to push the envelope even further. Today at a press event, Electronic Arts surprisingly unveiled SSX Tricky for the GameCube in playable form.
While not an entirely new game, SSX Tricky expands upon the formula that made the original such a hit. There are several gameplay modes included in SSX Tricky, but most are simply tweaked versions of the originals. World circuit is the primary one-player mode, where you gradually progress through the game's courses and are awarded with new boards and attribute points for your character. The single event mode allows you to compete against other riders on the course of your choice. The practice mode includes an updated version of the trick tutorial that actually shows you each trick, instead of having to watch multi-trick sequences. The trick book is now broken into five chapters with 10 tricks in each one, making it much easier to sort through.
There are six new characters included in SSX Tricky, as well as six from the last installment of the series. Character interaction has been increased significantly before, during, and after each race. Riders will develop rivalries with other competitors, resulting in grudge matches and confrontations at the end of each race. You will also have allies that will alert you to a rival bearing down on you and they will even protect you from attacks. If you attack a rival until its tolerance meter peaks, they will talk even more trash, follow you down the hill causing problems, or completely take you out. There are two completely new tracks added to SSX Tricky including Garibaldi and Alaska. Alaska is the final course in the game and EA Sports Big promises that it will test the mettle of the best SSX player. Several courses from the original SSX will return in a completely remodeled fashion. Although, it's difficult to find the similarities between the old and new versions due to so many track elements being changed.
The gameplay has been drastically altered to supply much more depth to the game. There are several uber tricks that each rider can pull off and landing each one gives you a letter towards spelling the word tricky. If you complete the word, a loop of Run DMC's It's Tricky begins to play, alerting you that you can now perform your character's specific super move. If you land the super move you will have a full adrenaline meter for the remainder of the race. Controlling your rider in SSX Tricky takes some getting used to, even if you've spent some time with the PlayStation 2 version. Because the GameCube controller has just two shoulder buttons, using a combination of a shoulder button and either the X or Y button performs tricks. Boosting is accomplished with the large A button and jumping is performed by pressing B. The yellow analog stick is used to dish out punishment on the competition.
SSX Tricky for the GameCube is currently in its pre-alpha stage, but it's already surprisingly advanced. All the tracks and characters are included in the game and the graphics already appear polished. EA stated that SSX Tricky is currently scheduled for release at the end of this year.
