E3 2002: Activision acquires Z-Axis

The publisher responsible for the Tony Hawk series buys the studio behind the Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX games.

Activision has announced that it has acquired Z-Axis, the studio behind Acclaim's Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX game series. This acquisition is Activision's fourth in the past seven months, following the acquisitions of Treyarch, Grey Matter, and Shaba Games.

"We are thrilled to welcome Z-Axis and its talented staff to Activision," said Larry Goldberg, executive vice president of Activision Worldwide Studios. "For the past eight years, Z-Axis has consistently delivered top-quality games for the console platforms."

Under terms of the agreement, Z-Axis has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision, and the Z-Axis management team and key employees have signed long-term employment contracts with Activision. Z-Axis is currently developing Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 3 and the upcoming Aggressive Inline.
