Spawn Hands-On Impressions

We play a more-complete version of the action shooter starring Todd McFarlane's hellish hero.

The release date for Spawn, Namco's action game based on the eponymous undead comic book star, is fast approaching, and at Nintendo's recent Gamers' Summit we took a look at a build of the GameCube version that has gone through quite a few updates since we last saw it. If you've been keeping up with the development of the game, you'll know that Spawn is an action shooter very much in the vein of Devil May Cry. Of course, Spawn has access to a huge amount of weaponry--his classic chains and ax are available, as are all manner of firearms and a handful of hellish magical powers. That's good news, since Spawn will literally be fighting the forces of hell throughout the game.

Since we played the previous builds of Spawn, the changes in this newest version were immediately evident. Many small elements have been added, such as a host of new, minor animations that give the overall flow of the game a more cohesive feel. For instance, when Spawn uses his chains to rip an enemy in half, the enemy will now visibly stretch for a second prior to splitting open, and then a large shower of blood will rain down. Plenty of other small touches, such as tweaked camera operation and destructible environment objects (such as fire hydrants and shopping carts), all add up to make this newest version of Spawn feel much more complete than when we had last played it. It seems like developer Point of View will have no problem fleshing out the feel of Spawn's gameplay before its November release.

We also got to take a look at the game's impressive opening cinematic, which is still being tweaked but already seems pretty finalized. It features some high-quality voice work and does a pretty good job of bringing up to speed new players who are unfamiliar with Spawn and the comic book's universe as a whole. The CG in this cinematic scene is really surprisingly good; hopefully, the rest of the game's cinematics will be of similar quality. You can find a lot more information on Spawn in our previous coverage of the game, and we'll bring you more in the near future.
