Midway Arcade Treasures 2 Hands-On
We take a look at the GameCube edition of Midway's latest classic compilation.
Midway recently showed off the GameCube version of Midway Arcade Treasures 2, and the 20-game package appears to be running quite well on Nintendo's system.
The budget-priced compilation contains a number of multiplayer games, such as Championship Sprint, Cyberball 2072, and Pit Fighter. The game also contains three one-on-one fighting games: Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3, and Primal Rage. As you might expect, the development goal for each of the 20 games in the package is to present an arcade-perfect re-creation of the original. The GameCube version already appears to be off to a great start--the version on display at Midway's event didn't contain any of the nasty slowdown that was present in the recent work-in-progress Xbox and PlayStation 2 versions we recently previewed. The games also seem to control just fine at this point, though fighting games like Mortal Kombat II and 3 seem really strange on the standard GameCube controller. Button positioning can be altered, though, so players should be able to find a usable control scheme for every game.
Though a few of the games in the collection--Spy Hunter II, to name one--are stinkers, great games like Xybots, Xenophobe, and Total Carnage make strong cases for Midway's budget-priced collection. Look for it on shelves this October.
