Gargoyle's Quest brings you good platform action well merged with also-good RPG time.

The Bad: Controls are a little too slow; the game is a little too short.
Gargoyle's Quest is an amazing idea for a spin-off in the Capcom's Ghosts'n Goblins series (that later resulted into a classic game for the SNES, Demon's Crest) where you control the villain, a demon called Firebrand (that red one). In this game you must bargain with ghouls and other demons: finding items for them means more power for you; and in the end you save the realm almost accidentally.
The game system consists in talking to "people" in the towns, and walking through the map looking for some hidden items in other locations. But the things get different when you reach that locations or find enemies in the map: instead of a turn-based battle as expected you'll face a 2D platform level, where you can even fight a boss in the end. That's the good mix of the game, and it works well. As you bring back items for the kings in each town they can make you stronger by raising levels in your jumping, firing and soaring abilities, or giving you more HP. Still in the towns you can trade items for your own use and get a password to resume the game later from where you stopped.
The graphics are great, all made in big sprites (that's an important thing when we're talking about Game Boy), but the character moves are a little slow. The soundtrack is good, and the way they change the tone in the "people's" talking noise is funny - a rudimentary emulation of voice. The stereo sound works fine too.
After all a very interesting game though a little short.
