The first Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer gave us a glimpse of what we could expect in the standalone movie. With the second trailer, more details are revealed about the story and characters.
The trailer begins with a flashback reminiscent of the scene with Luke Skywalker staring off into the suns of Tatooine. This time, it's Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) preparing for the arrival of agents of the Empire.
The officer is accompanied by the black-clad Deathtroopers.
Galen tells his daugther, Jyn, "Whatever I do … I do it to protect you." We know he's important in the construction of the Death Star. This shows he's working for the Empire against his will.
Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) is the Director of Advanced Weapons Research for the Imperial military. He personally sees to the acquisition of Galen Erso.
As Galen is taken away, young Jyn watches while hiding.
The flashback ends with Jyn (Felicity Jones) waking up in a prison. The previous trailer mentions she was locked up for forgery of Imperial documents, possession of stolen property, aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and has been on her own since age 15.
Jyn is freed from imprisonment by the Rebels.
The Jedi were wiped out in Episode III. As the Rebels take Jyn to their base, they fly over the giant remains of a Jedi statue. Rumors suggest this could be the planet Jedha, home of one of the first civilizations to use the Force.
Jyn is brought to Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly). They ask her when she last spoke to her father. Jyn was unaware how important her father was in the construction of the Empire's super-weapon.
The Death Star is near completion.
The Rebels need to rescue Jyn's father. As they fly towards a destination, their ship is asked for its call sign. This is where "Rogue One" is first used.
Krennic speaks to Darth Vader about the power of their weapon.
We don't get a shot of this officer, but it's likely to be Grand Moff Tarkin.
The Rebels gather in another scene similar to the previous films. The question is raised: What chance do they have against the power of this weapon?
It's been said the tone of this film will differ from the others. With a focus on the war aspect, we can expect a lot of brutal scenes with the Empire plowing through any resistance.
Saw Gererra (Forest Whitaker) is seen again. The character was an extremist rebel first seen in the animated Clone Wars series. The fight has taken its toll on him as we see he lost a leg and appears to have a respirator.
Aside from being a war movie, there is also a heist film aspect. The Rebels have to go undercover and infiltrate the Empire.
Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Wen) is a blind warrior/monk with a strong belief in the Force. He is not Force-sensitive but has used his beliefs and faith to train his body for battle. He does a great job against the Stormtroopers but also receives some assistance from Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen).
The fight won't take place only on the surface of various planets. There will be space battles. This is something we didn't see too much of in The Force Awakens.
Darth Vader. We get a pretty good look at the Dark Lord of the Sith. He will be doing what he does best against those who oppose him.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in theaters on December 16.
