I'd love some tips to get started with the Kestral A (Federation A?) type ship, especially in the early sectors.
The 4 main strategies seem to be:
* Weapons + Shields: Buff lots of weapons in particular to try to take down your opponent's weapons (or shields) quickly, so you take minimal damage. Blow up lots of ships and take as much scrap as possible. I've heard it said this strategy isn't a great one because you make more money if you can take the ship from the inside. But the Kestral doesn't start witih a transport beam.
* Cloak + Dodge: Save up cash for a cloaking device, and focus on dodging hits to minimize the cost of doing business. I've been using the blow-ships-up strategy and it's very costly to keep up the arms race, so I can't imagine getting a cloak early on.
* Drones: I've barely tried anything with drones. Can this be a winning strategy for the Kestral given that it doesn't start with drone control?
* Transport + Boarding Party: Seems very difficult to go this route given I only have 3 people to begin with and no transporter beam.
3 of these strategies rely on finding expensive things early, so they hardly seem possible early on.
How do I maximize my early sectors to help me survive the later sectors?

About the Kestral, it has one of the best weapons in the game, a missile for backup, and and average everything else. It lets you do whatever you want and is very well rounded for most play-throughs.

Don't max out your Engines before anything else, that's silly. But putting a few upgrades into that early can help your survivability a lot. Once that's done, then get your second shield, and decide what else to expand based on what you've found/bought along the way. Upgrading to level 2 Doors should also be an early priority.

I tend to go for either shields or engine as my first upgrade, depending upon what I get thrown.

The weapons are a good start, so you probably dont need to buy any extras until at least Sector 3. Unless you get given a good one in which case great.
First few upgrades should on a couple of extra engine points, an extra shield, and blast doors.
If you can buy a teleporter and a couple of crew to make use of it then this is a good investment.
Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.

It seems there are some weapons where only shields help (the beam weapon that cuts across multiple rooms) and other weapons where only engines help (do missiles get slowed down by shields at all?).
I'm on my first game trying boarding parties. I was convinced they were too risky with only 3 crew members, that I'd need that crew for systems damage control, etc. etc., but it's working a lot better to capture ships from the inside instead of just blowing them up.
