Under the radar, and one of the best DS games out right now.

User Rating: 9.5 | Front Mission: The First DS
That's right people, Front Mission DS. Don't be put off by its old-school graphics or gameplay, this is one of the best strategy games on the market right now. A gently altered port from the Super Famicom, Front Mission is a tactical RPG with rock solid gameplay, a ton of playtime with two campaigns (the first playthrough of both campaigns took me 30 hours, and I never got bored!), and an AMAZING story that so often comes along with Square Enix games. Strategy fans, this is a must-have.

Well, I originally bought this to keep me busy until advance wars came out, but I don't have DoR yet. Why, you ask? Cuz I've been playing this! This has exceeded all my expectations and will be one of the games in my permanent DS collection, which now only includes NSMB, LoZ PH, the Pokemon games, and Animal Crossing. The game has two campaigns, both set on Huffman island (an island in the middle of the Pacific formed by volcanoes) in the late 21st century. You control a squad of wanzer (giant robots) pilots and their machines in an effort to take over the island. There is a campaign for each faction (the O.C.U. and the U.C.S.), which are fighting each other for control. I won't give you details, but it is the most engrossing story I've seen on the DS, with as many twists and turns as, well, uhhh, something twisty (dang I've awful at metaphors like that). The two plots of the campaigns are woven together seamlessly, and they do deal with some pretty substantial issues.

The menus (which display a wealth of information impressively) are easily accessed via the touch screen or the buttons (I prefer using the buttons, but that's just me). The strategizing has a lot to do with what you do in the shop, customizing each wanzer specifically for the way you trained the pilot (in short, long or melee attacks). This creates for fairly easy missions, providing you have a good set-up strategy. Their are those that do require a bit of luck, making the game feel challenging and giving you a sense of pride after beating the campaigns.

All in all, this is a good pick up for anyone. I can see some people not liking it (some missions are a bit lengthy) but in my opinion it is one of the best (and under the radar) titles on the DS to date.
