It wasn't broken, yet they felt like fixing it.

It was rather obvious once true 3D-capable consoles came into view, we'd see the old 2D games remade into 3D ones. Hasbro Interactive did a lot of this, and they really weren't successful. You can include this remade Frogger with that classification.

Frogger was a classic arcade game where you played the little frog who had to make his way across an increasingly challenging obstacle course to reach 5 baby frogs. Basically split in two pieces, the first always had you crossing the busy streets, and the second had you skipping across logs and alligators and so on. There is one level like this, except that it's zoomed in so far you can only see a few feet in front of you.

The levels are larger (albeit not very impressive), though why not scroll upwards? I wouldn't have minded that at all over the very close view that they decided to use. Of course, it'd be absurd to do such a thing--they had to show that Frogger was a blocky 3D creature! The consequence is simply the fact that you don't know where to go or where to turn, then you have the time limit tacked on for more fun. Some levels even have you sliding on ice; imagine how that works. The whole game suddenly becomes level memorization, and that's not how Frogger is supposed to be. Also included is how you have to time in your head. Since you can't see them, you just have to know when they'll be coming around. Again, not very fun, and by the time you are done learning to time like that and have all the levels memorized, you probably won't want to play it anyways.

The game is still played somewhat in a two-dimensional kind of way, though they simply had to make it three-dimensional. (Everybody's doin' it!) As said, these are very blocky models, and while clean, they are pretty ugly. The music gets old and annoying pretty fast, though at least the sound effects are classic Frogger.

I also own a Frogger game on the SNES that was released at around the same time as this one. It was just the old arcade title updated on technical grounds, though I've definitely enjoyed that one more. The least they could've done was included the original Frogger or at least zoomed the camera back to the way it was before. Once you've found out how to do it, you're basically done with it and end up asking for the lost time back. It held my attention for just a little while, then I put it down never to [or feel like] picking it up again. To be honest, go play the original Frogger, no matter how much you have already. You're bound to have a better time.
