This is indeed a great review. I both love and hate Freelancer. Love it because even after all of these years I still drag it out and play it. Hate it bc every space sim since I have compared to Freelancer and few, if any, measure up to it. I wish MS had not pulled support from Freelancer II. Even if they supported an XBox 360 sequel... There are tons of fans who would appreciate such a move.

Im glad they made it mod-able. Now one can still play it online even tough official support has long ended. I personally prefer the FL discovery mod.

Developers should realize that if they want their games to live forever, they need to make it mod friendly. Can't say much for this one except that there are some great ones out there, which may be why it's still being played by thousands of players even though it's almost eight years old. I've played through it 10+ times. Had a setback when trying it in Win7 64 though, the sound/music was out of sync and some didn't play at all. Googled but with no luck. It really brought tears to my eyes :( Freelancer FTW!

It's really a great game, 7 years on and I still play it daily. Mostly thanks to the modding community out there. If you want to vastly improve your gaming experience with freelancer, I recommend you try ou the "Crossfire Mod". It adds dozens of new systems, lot's of ships, missions, player controlled factions that fight over possesion of systems and a dynamic economy when playing multiplayer. And it updates the visual graphics of the game immensely, it's one of the greater freelancer mods out there if not the best, and the support is great. Freelancer ftw!

@AndrzejSugier @Chirodip_08 well you guys have to remember that back then GS had higher standards compared to now. 8 of that time is a 9 now. And knowing Greg, his 8.3 would translate to a 8.9 or 9 according to current standards. @ChiefFreeman - trust me when I say this, a game controller wouldnt have done a better job with Freelancer's controller. Its actually lot more suitable to the keyboard and mouse scheme...much easier to control, smooth and accurate

Great game but the single player campaign ends too quickly, and it could've covered more of the gameworld. Then there's a part where you can no longer decline missions until you finish the campaign. More randomly generated mission types would've been nice too.

Looks really good.No reason why it shouldn't get a 9.0 !

this looks like an action game masquerading as a space sim. The action looks terrific, but playing this with a keyboard and mouse instead of a gamepad would be a big turnoff. I'm impressed with all the onscreen action for a game from 2003.

It's a shame that a score of such wonderfull game is dragged down by unreasonable expectations..At least 9/10 for me,incredibly acessablie, engaging, long and have just right amount of chalange
