Free Realms First (and Last) Look
Sony Online Entertainment's free-to-play massively multiplayer online game will attempt to shake up the genre's staid conventions--but you didn't hear that from us.
After you read this preview, don't expect to hear much more about Free Realms on the pages of GameSpot. Sony Online Entertainment is doing a lot of things differently with its upcoming freely distributed and free-to-play massively multiplayer online game. For starters, SOE plans to market the game solely through viral methods; it will probably do things like seed message boards and allow word of mouth to spread. So we're not expecting to even see the game again before it releases on the Internet, much less obtain any screenshots or videos to show you.
Luckily, we're glad to write about it anyway, because Free Realms sounds rather interesting. The game is being created primarily for the PC, with a PlayStation 3 version planned as well. It's also being created so that people with computers of all shapes and sizes will be able to run it. That means you shouldn't expect the game to push any graphical boundaries like most retail MMO games do. But on the flipside, Free Realms will purportedly be quite compact because you'll be able to download the game client, as well as get up and running within the gameworld itself, in a matter of moments. Rather than installing the entire game to your hard drive, you'll also be able to download new components piecemeal as you move around the gameworld.
What we got to see of the game itself looked fairly promising. SOE says it's targeting both male and female gamers from a wider range of ages than it has with past MMO games. To that end, the company is crafting a lighthearted, whimsical sort of world in which your adventuring will take place. No details were revealed about the lore behind the gameworld, but it looked like a cartoonish, vaguely medieval setting with some real-world elements, such as what appeared to be a Halloween celebration. Again, this isn't the most graphically complex game you've ever seen, but it seems to be taking the World of Warcraft track, with colorful and varied art design making up for any technical shortcomings.
On the gameplay side, SOE is doing a lot of things differently than it would with a typical MMO game. For one thing, there will be no player classes. Combat will also be optional. Despite these two omissions, the designers promise there will still be "meaningful character progression." You'll find plenty of quests to undertake, but they just won't all involve fighting. For instance, you might have to sit down and win a game of chess in the town tavern to complete a quest objective. Or you might stumble on a soccer field in the middle of a forest and simply decide to play a pick-up game if you like. From the sound of it, Free Realms will encourage you to engage in any and all of the activities you're interested in, while allowing you to ignore the ones you aren't.
So how is SOE going to support all this? As mentioned, the initial game client will be free for anyone to download and play. Development and support of the game will be subsidized by banner ads that are said to appear outside of the game window itself, though players will be able to pay a small subscription fee to remove ads. Some product placement may also be a possibility, but SOE wouldn't say how this sort of advertising might appear in-game. Lastly, there will be some opportunity for microtransactions for advanced players: You'll be able to drop a little coin for special items that aren't available to the freebie players. But again, company reps couldn't provide more details on such small transactions at this point.
Free Realms is looking like an interesting experiment in alternative game design and distribution. From the looks of things, it might amount to quite an entertaining time as well. We're not really sure what SOE's viral marketing campaign will entail, so we can't say just yet where you should look for more information. So for now, if you want to know more, just keep your ears to the ground.

I hope in a near future to see a great RvR game, where you can do siege, and massive fight, but of you want to do some nice pve you can do it without pvpers problem ... and all fo this FREE ... lol
This games success will be with the PS3 because there aren't any MMOs for PS3 right now. I hope the PS3 version releases soon.
I don't really see this working out. Way too many mmos out/coming out already, this one will just be swept under the rug with games like WoW, GW, LotRO, AoC, RS, WAR, GW2, etc.
whoah, d00rag... talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater. It takes a very small, closeminded viewpoint to completely discount a company so arbitrarily. All things considered, with kids of my own now, this might be something nice to occupy their time with... I`m interested indeed.
I don't know about this one. It sounds like the premise of the game is to play a bunch of shallow mini-games to level up your character. Half-ars soccer concepts and chess don't get me all that excited!. Oh well, i guess we'll just have to wait and see what else is up their sleeves...It's free though, so I'll be giving it a try, I guess.
omfg this sounds awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Oh yea another SOE free mmo game cool!
In response to d00ragg: It's a good thing then that they don't *need* any of your time or money.
Sounds pretty awsome! Cant wait to check this out. And hell its free so if i hate it ... wat difference does it make!
hey !! i didn't catch anything !
I'm In Its Free
Everyone is like, "OMGzorz!!! I hate ads!!!" If there r ads around the banner, what is the problem? If they have billboards that have ads, still no problem. The only problem i have with ads would be that if there was an ad for Axe in my mideval game.
since its free i wil check it out
a risky strategy.... let's just hope it pays off!
Sounds like runescape on drugs. Its free, so there will be no reason for me not to check it out.
SOE.... Would not do this if it was not gonna bring a more value to their company! ?wink? As far as some of their other releases.... Yes, they have ruined their fair share of games and concepts that should have not been messed with such as SWG, Everquest, Planet Side, etc. They call it enhancements but in reality is some new guy in marketing or leadership who does not have passion for the end product or the user. Total lack of loyalty to their customer base (the gamers) that got them to where they are...or were since all of their MMORPG's are down in subscriptions. New attempt... Doomed from the beggining due to lack of commitment to user. LOL
thats ok lets give sony some time. and it will rock.

just like runescape and most websites...not anything that can fuel sony (obviousely) but i like the idea, more MMORG!
why ps3 lol what does ps3 have ahh well i have a pc
Come on they have ruined MMOs that we PAID for, how on earth can we expect them to make a good MMO and make no profit? There has to be a catch.
Who are they kidding? SOE is the BIGGEST money GruBBER of the whole industry! The only way things are going to be free with SOE is by pledging to give them your first-born child
They must be using this to try out their new "subscription" theory. basically, what you do is dish out lots of micropayments for stuff that you really can't enjoy the game without. This is their answer to dwindling sales with the "old" method of buying online time. I forsee The Agency to follow suit, along with more or less every other MMO they release. What's best? You'll have to play their "game" in order to play their game.
I played EQ for over 4 years, and had a blast, but I got sick of paying SOE every month. Since this is free, there is zero risk for us to try it. If this game is half as fun as the original Everquest, even with the older graphics, then I will give it a shot.
mmhmm SOE with a free to play dont make me laugh
Tamtamcool, did you read the entire review? Read the second to the last paragraph... they mention various forms of income.
Runescape is kinda old, and has nothing in it from the real world. it just has a bunch of boring stuff. This game could be somewhat like Maple Story in some senses, a multiplayer arcade game, but that has fun stuff from the real world like snowboards, fans, and what not, and that could be awesome. Also, no high performance requirements and it's free! :D Anyone can get up something amazing, if they put enough work. The only thing Im concerned about, is how are they planning to pay for the servers once it goes public? In many online games you can buy with real cash special items or features, and it works for the game's finances, but to make this game truly amazing, they're gonna need lots and lots of features, volleyball, soccer, football, chess, sodoku, go karts? also really the fighting side should be quite good too, and so in character progression, it would be disappointing if everyone, those who are good or played longer are equal to those who just started and aren't good(nubs). :P Sony is a big(huge) company, so we can expect them to pull off something amazing, I believe. Not only, the market for these games is in the sky right now, they have competition which -WILL- make them brainstorm while they're asleep. Good luck Sony! :D
It sounds like Runescape to me.
it seems like an interesting idea...and since its free, i'll be sure to check it out. my only concern is that with these graphics described as "cartoony", the game end up taking place in a more childish world. and with combat optional, the combat system may not be in-depth enough for those of us who want to fight. unless SOE can pull off something amazing (which they haven't really since the first EverQuest), this game may not turn out so well.
$ony like the other mega media corporations and associations like RIAA are DRM fanatics . Expect it to be safe and profitable for advertisers first, copyright licence holders second and somewhere down the list us gamers (consumers in their eyes). It's free so don't complain, better still don't bother, time is valuable.
I think it sounds fun, I think we have progressed beyond runescape, but even that had it's own fun. I thank Runescape for the hours of quiet time it gave me by keeping my kids busy lol
"Destroyeron13" They are better off buying Runescape than creating a copy of itself... seriously. There are more active accounts (paid + free summed) than WOW or any other recent MMORPG.
worst idea for a MMO ever
This is going to suck. Age of Conan ftw!
Runescape?
Sounds like There.com
Dont Really like SOE Games, although Planetside was ok for awhile. But this doesnt interest me since ive gone off MMOs *thanks wow*
Sweet another runescape...
well.. lets wait and see....
SOE scares me with their games. I it would take a miracle to get me back on any SOE games.
Well it sems to me they r desperate, As it stands now I will never ever touch a sony game again. They have to me lost all creditability to all gamers, the ones that r still playing thier games hasnt learned thier lesson yet. Nuff Sd
try to please everyone and you will end up pleasing no one.
i think is a cool idea. i might not play the game my-self, but i think it's always awesome when a company tries new and creative things. It keeps the industry fresh. I am curious to check it out.
SOE, don't bother me with this one! Don't like the premise and don't care for the marketing method. So, leave me out!
Sounds Craptastic(tm). SOE should totally mess this up this one. A game that is all things to all people and nothing to anyone.
An example of "viral" marketing: From rootkit implementers, backers of MPAA, RIAA and all other "enforcers" of copyright for billions of dollars comes a free game that it' s like no other: full of ads of all kind, all the interesting will cost an arm and leg. Buy it! BTW the game stinks!
Hmm a Viral Marketing Campaign from a company that has put viruses on music CD's. wonder if I'll just turn my computer on one day and there will be a FREEREALMS sub folder in my WOW dir. mind you if it's viral it's probably set to install over all MMO'S that aren't SOE affiliated.
Might but nitpicking, but "Wow is just a dumbed down version of the original EQ, and Guildwars doesnt even qualify as one." ... Guildwars isn't a clone indeed, it's a better and more original game than WoW is ...
Remember this is free so don't complain. I am looking forward to it.
