If this is Peter Pan, then Neverland is in real big trouble

User Rating: 1 | Fox's Peter Pan & the Pirates: The Revenge of Captain Hook NES
Peter Pan and the Pirates was a TV cartoon on FOX, it was about Peter Pan and his friend's adventures through Neverland as they fight against Captain Hook. Now because of the success, there was a game based off it on the NES that could have been an instant classic, but thanks to THQ they put money making before programing a good game.

In the game, you play as Peter Pan and you must go against your old nemesis again, Captain Hook, the basic goal is just to beat up the pirates and move on to the next level, if it sounds like fun, boy are you in for a surprise. The first thing that you will notice is that the game has 4 title screens, 4 screens showing the developers and people who created it, at least it shows us the people who won't make games ever again. When the game starts you get a scene of Peter and Hook talking to each other, if that is Hook that is, he looks nothing like his cartoon counterpart, he looks like he has a neckbeard going on, and why is he blue? Is he a ghost? The graphics look really bad, Peter looks nothing like the character from the show, the character sprites are really small, you can barely tell what is a platform and what is not, and they are too colorful, it looks like the programmers went crazy with Microsoft Paint. The sound is even worse if you can believe that, the same music loops over and over throughout the level, the death sound effects are poor, they sound like Atari 2600 beeps and bloops, and there is a jumping noise that's really irritating. The enemies are really weird, apparently not only does Peter fight pirates, but also cavemen, pterodactyls, spiders, and cannons that can load themselves up and fire on their own. Peter's biggest disgrace however is how he fights, you have what looks like a dagger, but it barely hits anyone, the range is short, and it's better to avoid enemies than fight them, which you can't do (I'll get to that in a minute). The level designs aren't even interesting, the developers just repainted the same levels again and put them in there, real originality there. Now onto the gameplay, in each level you have to make your way through pits, fires, and other hazards but it isn't that simple, you have to go through each level and kill the pirates otherwise when you get to the end of the level, Wendy appears telling you Hook's pirates still rule Neverland and Peter has to go back, find and kill them, why? It's just tedious. The controls are delayed, Peter takes a few seconds to jump, the attack is delayed, and moving seems to take a little while for Peter. Of course no bad game is complete without the glitches, there is no recovery time when you take damage, you can go right through platforms even if you think you landed on it, no death animation or sound when Peter dies, and the music keeps playing even when you pause the game. There is finally the fact that there are no continues, no passwords or anything, of course if you want to play this some more, just go castrate yourself with a weed wackier.

I can't recommend this game to anyone at all, it's really hard and broken, making this game next to impossible to beat without cheats or save states, even a die hard fan of the FOX cartoon series will not enjoy this. Special thanks to THQ for just being too busy being on drugs while making this game. Just make like Peter Pan himself and fly away from this excuse of a video game.
