If it's additional content, like maps and suchlike, you have to find it on the Marketplace.
If it's an auto-update, like a patch to address performance issues or whatever, then it'll do that automatically when you boot the game up, providing you're connected to Live.

Sometimes they will update automatically but sometimes they wont. Its game dependent. The extra maps for battlefield 2: MC you had to go to the marketplace to download, but they told you it was there when you turned on the game. So this is game depended but its always a good idea just to check the marketplace for those things.
you have to go to the marketplace to download new maps or game content. you will automatically download patches that fix parts of the game that don't work properly.
