Does the game have LOCAL multiplayer? like over a lan network? I have 2 360's in my house, ones mine and ones my brothers, but I am the only one who has a live account, so I was wondering if the game had an option to play multiplayer through a LAN based network?

According to the wikipedia page on GTA IV, there isn't going to be any split screen or LAN gameplay.

Well I can tell you for sure that there won't be split screen multi, though there might be something similiar to what san andreas had, I dont know for sure.

Pretty sure it's Live only. If you truely want to play against each other, just have your brother create a Live account from his X-Box. New accounts made from the 360 get a 30 day trial. Don't make it from the official Xbox.com website, it doesn't give you the free trial from there...It has to be from the 360.

When I first found out they were gonna make a multiplayer for GTA I wasn't bothered. I thought it was gonna be like the sucky MP for Saints Row. After hearing of some of the features and reading some previews I can't wait for it. I also heard there was no split sreen play btw.

Dude, I've played all GTAs except the stories editions. Now GTA 2 for PC had multiplayer, and it was more fun then GTA3 and Vice. Now some people could not get past the top down view. Now i remember playing the corny MP on GTA SA and it sucked balls, it got boring very quick. So I am hoping they made this GTA IV MP much better. I said to myself after playing GTA SA if they didnt make IV w/MP I was gonna give up on GTA all together, cause it should have been done for SA, but I guess they had alot on their plate as it was. So I'm very happy to hear they've put MP into IV. Oh one more thing.. If in IV when you're racing down the street and see a group and gang bangers and decide to drive into them and the impact stops you dead in your tracks like in GTA SA... I'm going to be pissed... how unreal..

You should be happy with GTAIV then mate because they've put a lot of emphasis on the MP. I'm specifically looking forward to the 16 player free roam mode. Just think the whole city to ride around in and other players to fight/race/join up with. Can't wait.

Since Liberty City is so big, the consoles don't load all of it at once. The console only loads a small section of the city, and wherever you go, it loads that part of the city right before you get there. I think this is called Dynamic loading. Anyway, splitscreen wouldn't be possible because it basically puts twice the load on the console, which means the frame rate would drop to 10 to 15 frames per second, and the DVD drive can't load 2 (or 4, depending on how many people you're talking about) sections at once; it's not fast enough to do that. With a game like Halo 3, the reason there is split screen multiplayer is because the entire map is loaded, so anybody can be at any point of the map, because there's no loading to worry about.

On the other hand, system link multiplayer is possible because there are 2 seperate 360s that do all of the loading and everything.

you said, join up with... you'll be able to do that in free roam ? just like in SA where you point at a gang member and ask em to join...? like that?

No I don't think it works like that but what's to stop you and your mates going in the same room and working together? Theres no objectives as far as I can tell (hence free roam) so you wouldn't be going against the spirit of the game, like if you work together in a free-for-all on COD4 say, then you WOULD be going against the spirit of the game.

Thanks for all your replies guys, I will go with making a live account on my bro's 360 with a 30 day free trail, that should be enough days for us to enjoy the heck out of the game, if we crave for more fun then I guess I will just have to get him a subscription.
