Also the size of the file. Most arcade demo's are less than 50 megs. Some other demos are over a gig. (1012 megs). So...just to give you an answer...anywhere between 10 minutes to 2 hours depending on your internet connection and the files you're trying to download.
I don't think there is an average number here for all the reasons that people have posted already. Just know that if any demo takes you more than 3 or 4 hours to download, then you should try to figure out why..otherwise, you can ignore it..
It usually takes me around 20-25 minutes to download a 1gb demo. Yesterday I downloaded Beerfest in HD which was 5.3gb and that took around 1:30 - 1:45. I should also add that I have cable internet.
I have 8mb BT total broadband and live right next to the local exchange so actually manage to download at the full 8mb a second (its like having a private line to myself as my towns not that big) as long as the servers are not totally full i can download 1gig in around 10-15 min, however at peak times its more like 20-25 this is on wireless aswell
