I just bought Assassin's Creed 2 because my friend always talks about what a great game it is, so I figured I'd give it a go. But I have never played the first one, nor do I know anything about the story line. Can you fill me in on what I need to know or is it important to beat the first one before the second?
The second game gives a somewhat decent recap of what happened in the first game. While people would say the first game was bad due to it's linear gameplay, I would disagree. I liked the first game more, for strictly narrative reasons, and some of the gameplay choices (such as solo blending).
You can read a plot synopsis of the first gamehere.

[QUOTE="BlueWord"]Disagree completely. It is repetitive but the storyline is very good.
Don't play the first one It's a terrible game and no gamer should experience it
Story is very important in a game but it doesn't make up for bad gameplay..........or a bad game :P

I'd recommend buying the first one, AC2 does kind of let you know about AC1 here and there in the game but I'd still want to play AC1 first. You definitely should play AC2 before AC: Brotherhood that's for sure. I thought I seen AC1 for like $10.00 now which is definitely an automatic pick up if you don't have it.

I played the first game immediately before the second one, and you could easily get caught up on the story in the second game if you skipped the first one. The first game wasn't completely horrible, but there were a lot of narrative and design choices that made the game extremely annoying to play.

I enjoyed AC1, but you don't need to play 1 before jumping into 2. I let my friends borrow AC2 and they loved the game even though they had never even touched AC1. I don't think it will diminish your experience of AC2, but I do recommend it as AC1 is a good game.
