Confirmed: Crackdown, DR2 and DR2: Case Zero will be the next free Xbox games

This Thursday will see the release of the next game given free to all Xbox Live Gold members as part of the ongoing Games with Gold offer, but currently we don't know which games will replace Assassins Creed 2 in the promotion. Until perhaps now.

As spotted by NeoGaf, Polish gaming website Xbox 360 Online Center is claiming information from "a reliable source" that August's offerings will be Capcom's Dead Rising 2 and the very popular Xbox 360 exclusive Crackdown.

Crackdown, of course, is the open world third person action game from 2007 where you play a super-powered Agent dealing with the unsavoury element of Pacific City - or more accurately, bouncing around a massive city playground collecting orbs and throwing cars at unsuspecting criminals. The more recent Dead Rising 2 has a similar open-world shtick, only you're dealing with hordes of zombies as motorcyclist Chuck Greene in a Las-Vegas inspired city while trying to protect your daughter from becoming a member of the undead. While dressed in a mankini, if you choose.

Click to view larger image There's no info on which one we'll get first, or indeed if this information is accurate but we'll let you know when we hear any confirmation from Microsoft on our continually updated list of free games and don't forget to let us know which games you'd like to see turn up on the Games with Gold scheme.

In the meantime, will you be picking up these two free games? Are they better or worse offerings than we've seen so far? Sound off in the comments.

I would hope so since I wouldn't mind trying Crackdown.

Update: It's confirmed now!

I hate talking about rumors, but if this is true, awesome. DR2 was fun, and I have never played Crackdown but for the demo. It was fun, but I never got around to buying it.

I didn't already own Fable III, Defense Grid, Assassin's Creed II, and also don't currently own Dead Rising 2 or Crackdown, so that works for me.

So far I've owned every single game that has been free.. which is such a drag. Crackdown I've never owned though so maybe I'll try it.

Same here...all those games where on my radar, but I never got around to getting them. Now I get them all for free! lol

What about Halo 3 I thought that was going to be one of the free games..

Halo 3 should be free somewhere around August 1st.

I'd have preferred Crackdown 2 and the original Dead Rising, lol, but still good choices. Well, Crackdown 1 was better than Crackdown 2, but I don't have 2. Kinda disappointed Halo 3 isn't among the August titles if the rumor is true. I'm looking forward to the population boost for when ever the game is supposed to go free.

Not necessarily. they said it would be one of the free title, but they never specified when. Let's not jump to conclusions.

it doesn't matter if i own any of the games or not. i'll download them anyway

Well if they are free games it doesn't mean I don't want to hold onto the boxed versions.  I always prefer a physical copy vs digital for a few good reasons.

Might want to get rid of the word free. You dont get the games unless you pay for XBL meaning they arent free at all.

Would like if Crackdown was free. Enjoyed it much more than the second.

If it's true, they will be the first two games that I actually play, from the free game deal.

Crackdown going free would be a great thing because it would allow people who haven't played it to play it and hopefully see how much fun it is and how much potential the franchise has.

Crackdown is a great Microsoft IP, IMO, that deserves a lot more attention, as well as a new game.

Dead Rising 2 is the only one that I don't already own. I didn't own Fable 3 but I had already played it. I'll download Dead Rising 2 but it'll probably just sit in my backlog.

You are correct, as these are the same type of 'free' that PSN+ users get through PS3. You're paying for the Gold service that allows you certain benefits - the main one being online multiplayer. Extra benefits like game downloads that normally cost more money are a nice bonus, but the fact that certain games at certain times have no extra 'transaction fee' helps define them as free. Overall, I've been a Gold subscriber since 2004, and it's nice to get things, now, like full retail games for no additional cost than the $5.00 per month (or so) I've been paying mainly for online multiplayer.

I don't believe this is true, but if it is: great!

I don't have any of them and wouldn't mind playing them!

Specially Crackdown!

Turns out the Case Zero DLC is also free. Since I have DR2 I might just download that.

I mistook in thinking "Case Zero" was "Case West". Zero takes place - and was available before DR 2, whereas West is where you get to play as Frank West from the first game. Either way, getting games for no cost that I didn't already own sounds good to me.

both games are solid, hope you guys enjoy them :P I'll probably just add them to my dl history and maybe play them at another time. I still haven't gotten around to finishing AC2 yet. :P

I'm excited for DR2. It will be the first game in which I haven't played already.

I think they choose DR2 to help promote DR3 when it releases. I'm glad they did.
