Ever or just the 360.

Ever Deus Ex, Half Life 1, Planescape Torment were way better than Bioshock

Just 360

Mass Effect is just as good.

And Assassins Creed? that story sucked, sucked at an extremely high level. It made Halo 3 and COD 4 look like they had great stories.

Damn. I saw this thread, and was like, "Ooo, I can go on there and talk about how great Deus Ex and Torment are." But, someone beat me to it. Anyway, I agree, with the exception of Half-Life. I didn't think the story in Half-Life was all that incredible; it was basically an elaborate Doom. What made the game intriguing was the manner in which the story was presented, followed by a very interesting ending.

I do agree with your other choices. Deus Ex is still the shooter/RPG hybrid. I'm sure Biosystem Shock fans out there will disagree. Bioshock is barely a hyrbrid; it's a shooter with some RPG elements. The near complete lack of NPCs in Bioshock bothers me when calling it an RPG. And no, someone chattering on your radio, and finding audio tapes do not make NPCs. There's always someone yacking on the radio in Ghost Recon and you find a million audio logs in Doom 3, but that doesn't make them RPGs. Along with, and somewhat due to, the lack of NPCs in Bioshock is a complete lack of optional quests. And no, finding secret areas or doing annoying things for Gamerpoints do not count as side quests. Deus Ex, on the other hand, completely incorporates these elements.

Torment had an incredibly good story and is one of the deepest games ever made. I was reading online that Torment has two million lines of text in the form of conversations with characters and descriptions of items and events. To put that in perspective, The Lord of the Rings has about half a million lines of text. You know in Mass Effect how you have basically three responses (five if you've pumped up your CHA stats)? In Torment, you'll have a dozen possible responses. It's a really incredible game, and I've never played one where your interaction with the main characters was that involved.

Oh, and why is it always "Planescape: Torment" instead of just "Torment"? Planescape is the Dungeons & Dragons setting where the game takes place. Why's it in the title? No one calls Baldur's Gate "The Forgotten Realms: Baldur's Gate." Whatever, forget it.

Anyone ever play Strife? There's a shooter with a story, long before people knew such a thing was possible.

Xbox 360: Mass Effect or Condemned

PS3: Uncharted

Newer PC: Civ IV (You make your own story how awesome is that?)

Older PC: Space Quest (a janitor saves the galaxy...enough said)

Mass Effect has a good story but not to the calibre of BioShock. Half-Life's and surprisingly i really liked Prey's story too. :?

I thought Bioshock's story was bad...

Just my opinion.

Resident Evil, Silent Hill probably have the best stories Ive ever seen.

Both happen to be horror, but hey, they rock.

Are they only supposed to be 360 games? If not, then Metal Gear Solid. So far Mass Effect has one of the deepest stories of all the 360 games I've played.

Resident Evil Shmiity

Resident Evil. I guess it's kinda useless arguing about something that's a matter of personal opinion, but I think Mass Effect has a better story than Resident Evil. I'm not into survival horror games, so I also think that Halo has a better storyline than Doom 3. Mass Effect had a very detailed setting. Someone went to a lot of work coming up with all the background information that's available for you to read. Whoever wrote the sections relating to ground operations certainly knew what they were talking about. I enjoyed the astrophysical stuff too. Of course, some people don't care about background information, I imagine, and like 28 Days Later more than The Lord of the Rings. Then you have the characters in Mass Effect, which you get to know and can influence through your statements and actions, kinda like real people. I was particularly impressed *SPOILER* when it came to the point of having to choose which character lives and which one dies. That's a decision real commanders have to face, and it was impressive seeing it in the game. *END SPOILER* However, some people don't need character interaction, and prefer House of the Dead over Knights of the Old Republic. Finally, there's the plot. I guess that just depends what you're looking for. When you have a big tapestry like the one in Mass Effect, you can have a lot going on. I always liked Babylon 5 better than the Zombie series.

So anyway, it's all a matter of opinion. See above for mine.

Umm Final Fantasy 7 to me is one of the best stories of a game I can think of. I was blown away with how cinematic of a story Devil May Cry 4 was bu tI don't think I could put it up there with the best of all time.

FF7

BioShock

The Darkness isn't one you hear about touted as much as Bioshock/Assassin's Creed/whatever, but I think it has one of the best stories among 360 games.

I can only speak for games I've played, so I can't comment on Mass Effect and Bioshock, since I don't have a 360 yet, but IMO the best stories I can think of were definitely Final Fantasy VII and the 3 Metal Gear Solid games.

The metal gear solid series, Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy X and Chrono Cross would all get my vote. I'm not a fan of Bioshock or it's story. There is just something very uninteresting to me about having to have a story told to you through found video recorders. The Andrew Ryan's office twist was amazing but hardly made up for the rest of the game. Also, it wasn't very fun to play. I think I had more fun with the hacking mini game then anything else. Games where you can't die aren't exciting or very fun in my opinion. If it hadn't been for the vita-chamber, I would have liked the game so much more. It was just blah to me. The entire thing. But that's just my opinion. I enjoyed Mass Effect though. Too many glitches, but it was fun and had a good story. Not an AMAZING story, but it was good. I did hate how most of the choices you are given lead to the same response no matter what you choose. It feels like a cheap way to make you think you have options. But I still enjoyed it.

1. Xenogears

The story was by far the most complex, long, very deep, dark and intriguing I've come across in a game. It's unfortunate the developer had to cut the original on the PS1 short due to budgets and time constraints because a large portion of the game is left out with brief descriptions added. I tried playing the PS2 versions of Xenosaga but just couldn't get into it as much as the original.

2. System Shock 2

Shodan one of the all time great villains. The precursor to Bioshock and one of the early games with very brooding atmosphere, dark storyline.

Bioshocks story wasn't that great. period. they told the story pretty much telling you everything as you played about Fontaine and I knew that one guy had some kind of association with Fontaine and even thought it was him before tey reviealed it. i wasnt impressed with that game, seriously. i hate that it gets so much praise. Mass effect has a better story

I haven't played Mass Effect so I would say Half-Life 2 Episode 2, Morrowind (even if the presentation wasn't cinematic, if you explored and researched the story became better and better the more you unearthed), and Final Fantasy X.

The Deus Ex games have a great story. First game has a better gameplay of course but i really loved the direction they took with the story in the sequel, invisible war.

Hitman Bloodmoney properly has one of the coolest endings to a story.

The cnc games with the tiberium universe is great too.
