Xbox one play and charge kit help

Hey everybody, I just connected my play and charge kit to my controller and need help determining whether I bought a faulty set or if I am doing something wrong. I connected the cable on both the side and back of my xbox and the other end to my controller and yet no led light. The battery pack itself works because my controller is on and xbox home shows battery life. However, the cable also works because I remove the battery pack and can still use the controller. Hope you guys can help me figure it out, I have not logged on to this site in a long time lol...

So did the battery run out and then when you hooked it up it wouldn't charge? or is this just about the light?
