Purely a marketing thing I would imagine. Who would want an Xbox 2 when you can buy the PS 3.

Rule of thumb. The consumer is stupid. 3 is bigger than 2, thus better. The fluff about it being gamer-centric is just more marketing. IMHO

360 revolution.

Hence why the next will not be Xbox 720, unless they're looking to go for the dumbest name of all time. "Oh...it's another revolution."

MS didn't want to call it "Xbox 2" because the name of the competing console has a 3 at the end. So people may have been confused and thought it was a generation behind or inferior in some way.

At the same time though, "Xbox 2" just sounds terrible. Consoles don't have to follow the 1,2,3 form of naming.

I still have the official UK xbox magazine about how the 360 stands for being in the centre of the experience. It even has a nice picture of multiplible circles with a plyer in each being connected to represent Xbox live.

As for the next xbox, 720 won't do but Xbox 1080 could work. It sounds nice ''xbox.. 10.. 80..'' and withsome nice marketing it would also make sense. ''360°is a flat circle but 1080° brings the xbox into the next dimension!'' (or something like that)

Yeah, I agree Xbox 360 sounds better than Xbox 2. It's catchier.

I guess it is a bit weird, although I actually think the name works great, but that might just be because I have been saying it for many years now. :P

i think it's because of the logo on it. it's a circle with 4 lights the logo is there and things. this is the second xbox out there. sony has a 3rd system out there. the xbox would sound worse saying i have a xbox 2 and somebody saying i have a ps3 3 > 2. 360 sounds bigger then ps3.

It would be funny if Nintendo did that for fun and made theirs the Nintendo 5 then PS3 would maybe have to change it's name?

Seemed like a marketing technique and have the notion of saying your "surrounded with an awesome gaming experience" or something like that.

I've read this explanation as well. In fact, it's the only one i've read that was actually from a person in the industry, if not MS themselves.

Once MS sent the designs out to China to be manufactured they already knew there was potential problems and that the units had a high possibility for coming back for warranty repairs. After repairs or replacement it gets sent out to the user, thus completing a full revolution or 360º, thus the Xbox 360 came to fruition.

I WIN!
