Why did Microsoft make the 360's controller dpad so terrible?

it is mind boggling that they made it and were ok with how bad it is. playing a fighting game with it is horrible.

the best reason i can think of is maybe the good type of dpad is patented and microsoft couldn't come up with something better without paying to use someone else's patent?

Ya, when i play Gears of War 2 and go to switch weapons, sometimes I get the wrong gun out because the D-pad doesn't work as well as other controllers.

Europe was supposed to get an upgraded D-pad (presumably for FIFA). http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/54286

That question has baffled me since the first time I used an xbox controller. The D-pad is just downright terrible.

Its like those triggers on the PS3 controller. Triggers that bend inwards...really?....REALLY?

I really hate the D-pad, too. I have no idea what they were thinking when they made it.

i think it's because they didn't think the d-pad is as important as it was before...

I don't think it is that bad. If anything it just isn't good for fighting games. In all other games I have played, and I have played a lot, I don't care.

Most games now focus on using the analog stick for precision control so I'm sure that was their focus. The only kind of games that need a better dpad are fighters, and the really hardcore fighting fans usually go for arcade sticks.

It's actually pretty good, it just could use a little more resistance and range of motion.

What do you mean about the PS3 triggers? (seriously, I'm asking).

They feel flimsy and they are angled down so your fingers can slip off if you don't have a good grip(hasn't been a problem for me, but lots of others seem to complain). Lots of PS3 shooters use L1/R1 to fire because of it. (Uncharted, Infamous)

you can get a modded controller with ps3 d pad and you can get like weird triggers for your 360 controller but they run for about like 230 bucks

Okay. I get it. Yeah, I've not had trouble with that, but I can see how that would be annoying.

I think it's a great controller, and really good for playing shooters. I have heard many people complain about how horrible the D-Pad, but in my opinion there's nothing wrong with it, when I'm playing shooters and need to press a few buttons on the pad, it never fails me.

Their analog sticks are amazing, but when it comes to fighting games that xbox d-pad is a plastic nightmare. When a person tries to Hadouken there is a 50% chance of dragon punching instead, and being left open to a throw while coming down from the punch becuase of a sloppy d-pad is unforgiveable.

For fighting games it isn't the best, everything else is wonderful.

I can't count the number of times I've tried to call in a UAV/air strike/helicopter in CoD4 and instead put on my night vision goggles by accident.

I've had four different controllers since I got my Xbox, and on each one the D-pad felt different than the controller before. They also both controlled terribly.

It doesn't come into play often (thank goodness) but when it does it's a huge pain.

I agree the 360 D-pad is crap. I tried using it for a while on XBLA fighters and on my PC with MAME and couldn't stand it. My next purchase was one of the SFIV controllers and I'm loving it. The D-pad on those is much more responsive and I can hit in between commands with ease now.

The bottom line is, Microsoft doesn't care about hardware. I hope next time they get it right, but from the Thompson drive through to stuff like this, they just don't care.

yeah it is pretty bad. but no offence to anybody, but they probably weren'tthinking about 2d fighters when the made the controllers because the genre is kinda dead

I hear you, but another company sucking to the same extent (in another area) doesn't make me feel any better about my broken XBs and 360s.

Ya. If Nintendo and Microsoft got married it would be perfect. A reliable console, but without all of the new hardware being thrown at you left and right.

Generally I have no problems with the d-pad - until it comes to fighting games. Then everything just goes to pieces. A fireball is coming - I can easily block that! Oh, hang on, I've just jumped backwards instead. And now I'm dead.

I really want to download Garou and KOF XII, but I know that the wretched d-pad will my ruin my experience, so I'm hoping they make their way to PSN.

True, it's an ergonomic nightmare. I don't know what I'd do without Geotek real triggers.

And yeah the dpad does occasionally go in it's own direction especially in Gears and the Dashboard.

I totally agree. The D-pad is shockingly unresponsive. And it is almost on par with the PS3 triggers, they're dreadful!

Because they knew if they made a good d-pad for it they would have created the perfect videogame controller, and that scared them. :P

I wouldnt call it a mojor flaw but i do find myself changing guns in gta 4 when attempting to press cell phone, pretty frustrating.
