So yeah, I'm considering getting a router. Just a few questions: I'm still not sure exactly WHAT firmware is, is it just a fancy way of saying update? And am I able to get later versions of a router listed by MS or only the ones they list, no more no less? And of course, which is the best router for Xbox Live?

I use a Linksys WRT54G and I think a lot of other people do too. I'm on my second one over the course of 6 or 7 years I think. Really good router, never have many problems, and I think they're pretty cheap these days.

I've been thinking of getting that but I've heard some people have their NAT at moderate/strict.

Hmm, not too sure about that. Mine is set to open, I believe there is a way to set it yourself. My friend has a Microsoft router and his is set to strict.

I had 3 Linksys routers and all had problems with staying connected to Xbox Live. Do yourself a favor and get a Netgear. The Linksys' were great for everyday internet use, but online gaming is not its forte'.

Any model in particular? Belkins isn't in the list of Xbox Live compatible routers.
