every time i watch a review of a game i hear about how many achievements you can gain, and im been trying to figure it out, what is the point to them, do you win anything for getting the most and if you do what do you win, what do you get from these these achievements, someone help me out, and explain this to me please, thanks.

In some games it adds a little incentive to go back and play through the game a second time.

Some actually serve a purpose by unlocking features in the game.

However in most games it just serves as a way of comparing the size of your e-penor to another player.

there kinda is no point to it but you gotta admit, when that notification that you've achieved a new achievement comes up, it makes you feel a little better inside haha.

Just something fun to aim for. If you enjoy getting them then most likely you will play the game over again once you beat it to try and get the ones you missed.

it's not pointless.

it gives a game more replay value.

i've spend over 100 hours wit DMC4 just bc of achievements and over 80 with NG2 and i m not even done yet.

without the achievement i would probably play them 15 hours or so.

^thats true, the only reason why i completed GTA IV and AC 100% was for the extra achievements, otherwise i wouldn't have done it

The achievements in the games are awesome I think, it just shows how much you put into the games. Also it's a good way for your friends on XBL to see what games you are actually interested in and which ones you're really good at too.

what he said. I have about 10k gamerscore, and I really don't feel any cooler, tougher, or more satisfied than I did when I had none.

It's just for personal amusement. Gives you something extra to do when you're done with a game and adds some more replay value.

its a way to back up your bragging to your friends about how you did something cool in the game. it proves you did sumthing.

plus its just satisfying when you hear the little bleep it does when you win one...lol

Most people can achieve the hard achievements. They just take time and dedication, which isnt something most people will do when they just wanna have a little fun.

But yeah, they are almost worthless but they can give you the spirit to try the game out again, ill admit that. But id wish microsoft would give you something for those points, buy some arcade games or something, themes or gamer pictures, just something.

It adds replayability. I played Uno until I got all of the achievements, and now I only play it when my "Uno buddies", as I like to call them, are on.

One definite benefit of achievements is the ability to call out braggarts on forums such as this one. Below are two scenarios from my "Gamerscore Guide for the Novice":

  • A forum troll makes numerous complaints about the gameplay in Gears of War, and describes at length various bogus scenarios that annoyed him in the game. A quick check of his Xbox Live profile reveals that he has never even played Gears of War.
  • A forum idiot states that he easily beat Halo 3 on Heroic with the Iron Skull. Checking his profile shows that he's only beaten it on Normal, and that he doesn't even have the Iron Skull.

I'm sure everyone will agree that exposing stupid people for, well, being stupid is a lot of fun.

As to less concrete effects, achievements are just an extra challenge to overcome, which is what a lot of gaming is about. I suggest asking your dad or older brother why they spent so much time in arcades and on machines like the Atari 2600 when they were younger, where most games had no logical conclusion, and the only reason to play was to get a high score.

People point to the lack of tangible benefits that achievements produce, but it's not like gaming's a terribly productive activity to begin with. It's a hobby, and achievements give you another way to enjoy your hobby.

You get what it says. The clue is in the title. You get an achievement. It's a permanent mark on your record that shows what you've achieved in a game. Same as PS3's trophy system. That is also self explanatory. You get a trophy.

people who ask the point of achievements may want to ask the point of playing the games, or the point of having a high score in some games. aint no overall real point, just something to do and a way to mesure quickly what people have done in some games. i think they alright

He wouldn't know the feeling, Hes a PS3 Fan Boy... Just kidding. They add some incentive to playing through a game multiple times. (Not to mention it increases the size of your Internet Peni ; )

What is the point of life? Why do we even play video games? Really i don't understand why it matters. Either you like achievements and go with them or you don't and just play the games.

achievements add replay value. I know for some games I've played through them in a way I wouldn't normally for achievements points, focusing on the different word forms in Conan, going through Ravenholm with just the grav-gun, etc. They also act as proof for certain had to achieve tasks.

What's the point of any achievment in real life, any award, any trophy, any medal? It's to show that you've accomplished something and that's it. It serves no other purpose but to show that you've done something.

I generally like the idea of getting achievements, however I have to disagree about it showing "how skilled you are as a gamer", I have many people on my friendslist that play games like wall-e and kung fu panda just for achievement points . How ever if someone has some of those really difficult achievments like "20 kills with out dying" in Call of Jaurez (which I have, lol) anything along those lines I can understand being proud of ...but getting 1000 points for beating wall-e ? come on, get real...

One of the major incentives for me to gain GS points was during the Old Spice Challenge by Microsoft where you could win things by achieving oh so many GS points within a certain amount of time. And as was already said, it sometimes allows for unlockables in games like Halo 3. You can tell just by looking at peoples avatars whether or not they have all the achievments or not because they have the Katana on thier back that has no purpose but for bragging rights.

xbox360 games are 60 bucks,,so i think if you gun to get all the achievements in the game it actually means you did'nt waste 60 bucks on a game you will only play for a a couple of days with out achievements ...
