I used to buy GamePRO all the time, but from a 360 perspective OXM is probably the best out there. First they have a lot of exclusive details about upcoming games and it always comes with free demos and gamerpics.
Game Informer, out of all the magazines they have easily the best reviews, they don't hand out 10s to every superb though not perfect game like OXM and Gamepro, and they always have the first big previews on the biggest games. (First to cover Gears 1, Halo 2, Halo 3 I believe, and Gears 2.)
Note that magazines such as GamePro, EGM and Play are all good for general news, OXM and the like would offer you more if you want Xbox exclusive info (including demos and other stuff). Not to say the other magazines are bad though, in fact I enjoy reading GamePro and EGM whenever I can.
Game Informer's pretty good. for the most part, their scores are just about right (except the only perfect 10/10 score that I trust from them would be RE4)
I am subscribed to OXM. The demo disk has a lot of good stuff. Some times you get gamerpicks that cannot be gotten online or any were else. I like the mag better too as I am an XBOX fan not a fan of the other systems so that is what I want the info for.
I got Gameinformer. I got it mainly because of the exclusives. They have good previews and coverage on games. On top of that I do have an Edge card from Gamestop and i believe every 6 issues you get those sweet coupons for like 30% used games.

I hear ya - $10 an issue - although I finally wised up and subscribed - only cost $25 for a year & they still send you the demo disk !!! I saw a lesser sub rate for like $15, but no disks - thought that kinda sucked.
I have been subscribed to Gamepro, EGM, OXM, and Game Informer, out of those magazines I believe Game Informer to be the most well rounded and in depth one. They have nice articles on not just games, but the industry in general, that cover developers and current events. They also very frequently have big unveils of games with lengthy previews and good reviews.
If you are interested in all consoles and the industry in general then I would get Game Informer, but if you are only interested in 360 news and goodies then I would get OXM. As their demo disc can give away some small gifts
