On what grounds do you claim they are leaders in the field. According to my knowledge both the North American and European video game markets are larger then Japan. In addition many Japanese developers believe that they are falling behind the western developers and need to adopt their style more. In today's electronics market you can not do well if you do not sell in North America or Europe, but if you sell in North America and Europe you do not need Japan.

Yes, Twenty years ago Japan was the most important market for the video game market. Today they just aren't a large enough country to have the relevance they once did. In North America alone there are more people buying games then the population of Japan, though that point is mere speculation. The influence Japan once had on the market is fading. North America and Europe are growing in importance and far outweigh the Japanese. If you want to make a game that sells millions of copies, it needs to be westernized. Just look at the overall sales charts to see. The opinion of the Japanese of the 360 is irrelevant, because the 360 can still sell, make a large profitt, and dominate the market without them.

I have a friend from South Carolina and he's living in Japan, owns a 360, and says most of the people he knows own Wiis or Nintendo DSs.

Its like that guy said above, the gaming market is much bigger in North America and Europe then back in the day. The Japanese are great(and still VERY creative) at what they do but they are no longer the top dogs in the gaming market. Most of the great games coming out now are from European/American companies. Capcom just said their opening a studio overhere in the states because the market is more westernized nowadays.

Westernize games as what? as the looks of the characters? look at RE series it's a japanese serial and does have a westernize characters so I dont think a game must be a fully westernized or developed by westerners developers if you mean that

westernize games just means that japanese companies are starting to market their games more for the West. where they go out their way to pormote their games here moreso then in their homeland- japan. The companies are seeing more profit in the states n' europe so they're trying to build on that and make more money...

The fact that Nintendo dominated the home console market a couple decades ago is hardly evidence that it does today. General Motors and Ford dominated the American auto market 40 years ago, but they don't anymore.

And most games are inspired by Japanese games? The most played game right now I'm pretty sure is World of Warcraft. Its sty|e is a Western RPG, which was inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, and in turn Lord of the Rings, two bodies of work that are much older and have nothing to do with Japanese games. Shooters are (probably) the most popular genre of game on 360. They were inspired by which Japanese game? Wolfenstein? World War II movies. Doom? Evil Dead. Quake? H.P. Lovecraft. Duke Nukem? Yeah, Duke Nukem's very Asian.

It's fine if you want to know Japanese gamers' opinion of our console, but some of the conclusions you've attached with your question are completely absurd.

i haven't read the replies here, but the Japs aren't necessarily the leaders in the field - but they're definitely the founders. video games at their core are just another freaky japanese invention (plugging something into your tv then controlling what's on the screen by playing a game is bizarre), but now westerners have latched onto the idea and given it their own twist. so who are the leaders? well that's hard to say.
