As the topic states, I'm thinking about getting a Xbox 360 for christmas, but I have one major concern, this "red ring of death"??? From my understanding it was a pretty big issue when they first launched the 360. Is this still a frequent problem in 360's today? If so it seems like it would be too much of a hassle just to own one.

Here is the one I was going to purchase.

I would never buy a used/refurbished system. Buying used games is fine, but I always buy new. Anyway it's not as big of a problem as it once was. Hope this helps.

My 2007 Xbox 360 (3rd console) lasted 2 years. It broke last month, I don't know about 2009 360 consoles.

I hope my 360 that got repaired got the new stuff installed.

Meh, a refurb isn't the best idea.

But if you install your games, I DOUBT it would ever get hot enough to melt anything inside and then cause the RROD.

Mine doesn't go much over room temp. if the DVD drive isn't running, less heat etc. So little chance of melting.

I'd still try to get an elite from Amazon or something for like $275.

That doesn't look like a very good deal to me. Can't you get one at Best Buy for that price brand new, along with a couple of games? Otherwise, I think Amazon gives the best deals.

If your a big RPG player, it's sooooo worth it!

Yes you should get a 360, just not that one. I don't know much about US prices but over here for £200 you can get the Elite model, and the Arcade is only £40 cheaper. I got a 360 from 2007, that got the RROD but I took it back and replaced it in 08. Havn't had to return this one. What I would like to point out is that sending it to MS isn't always necessary. Quite often if the console gets the 3 red rings you can just turn it off from the wall socket and then turn it on again and it should be fine. I havn't bothered dealing with MS when mine has a fault, its much easier to return it to the place you bought it where they can give you a new one.

Buy a new Xbox 360 Arcade, because they are the Jasper model which is wwwwwwaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy more reliable... not sure if the elite is... but then ask for a harddrive as well... cause the arcade does not come with it.

Not a probelm with the new models... but if you get one, you absolutely have to get a brand new one. Refurbs will break, guaranteed. GET ONE NEW.

It's still a frequent problem. Probably not as bad but it still happen. Got my 360 back in 2007. RRODed once in 2007 and twice in 2008. So far I haven't had a problem this year. Among my friends I think only two of them had their 360s crap out on them. So I guess from my experience this year was better.

For the price of the arcade + hard drive, it is $50 more expensive than an Xbox 360 Pro, which comes with a free 1 month card, HD cables, a headset, and ethernet.... why the hell would you ever buy the arcade if you're going to get a HDD anyway? They are ALL Jasper models.

newer 360s are much better and have normal and acceptable failure rates unike the older ones which were guaranteed to break eventually. If you were to go buy a 360 now it would be a new one and the chances of it breaking would be small but just to be safe you should always get a warranty no matter what system you get.

Unless you have a major reason to use Xlive or the X360 exclusives, I see no reason to invest in a X360. The competition does everything else just as good (or better) and at the same price...

Dunno, get a Playstation 3. But however I think they are both the same consoles cause One third of games released are muti plaform, so 360 and ps3 are similar.

RRod is true also PS3 has a error to. But it is still unknown how you get it. You can play 15 mintues you can get it or 10 hours you can get it.

But you should check out Rewards 1.com for a FREE PS3, or 360. You just need to do surveys.
