ok i'm assuming this is a stupid question, but do i need to have played half life 1 before playing the orange box (well half life 2 to be precise)

no you don't, but if you want to find out the backstory without playing HL1 have a read of this site - The Half Life Story Saga Just be careful not to read too much as it does cover all the events so far, not just HL1

Well, to understand some of the story, maybe. Just like any other game or movie, if you jump in on a sequel, there will always be some part of the story that you may not understand or understand the significance of without seeing what came first.
