The most popular multiplayer shooters on Xbox have been Gears, Halo, R6, COD, and OB. Judging by this pattern, I think the next sci-fi or futuristic shooter will be, as you put it, "Crazy." I've got to go with Gears 2, although I'm curious as to how Battlefield and Quake Wars will fare online. Unfortunately, I think they will go the way of Frontlines and other mediocre shooters that have been released so far. A game needs a lot of horsepower behind it to be able to become popular online. Gears has a large fanbase because it was released only a year after the Xbox launched and its hardware issues were starting to be addressed. It is the flagship Microsoft shooter after Halo and I predict the sequel will be just as addictive as the original. Battlefield is an online centered game but I don't think it is innovative enough to become instantly successful.
Unfortunately, Gears 2 an exclusive title, and cross-platform multiplayer is not a popular mechanic, so the "craziness" of Gears 2 will only apply to the Xbox. Glad I've got mine :)
