So, I'm a big RPG fan, but I've never play either of the Mass Effect titles.

I'm pretty positive I'm going to try them out this holiday season, but I have a question:

Do I need to play ME1 to appreciate ME2? Or should I just jump straight in to 2? Just trying to figure out what you guys think will give me the greatest appreciation of the series as a whole.

It's not necessary to play the first one, but overall playing ME1 will definitely make you appreciate the story more. I actually preferred ME1 to ME2.

They are stand alone but it like reading Lord of the Ring the Two Towers and nor readding the first book. There is a big twist in the first one that is lost if you play the first game first. Without that twist the first Mass Effect story is not that good.

I'd advise playing the first game.

Mind you, I found most of it to be a bit of a chore to play until the final few parts.

But for Mass Effect 2 it's ALL worth it.,.

Personally I preferred ME1 to 2. You can get both very cheaply now and there both great games so get both.

Play the first game has a better story and Its cool to import your character into Mass effect 2 to see how your decisons from the past game affect your story and how people look at you .

ME 1 has a better story, but ME 2 is better overall. But skipping ME 1 is not an option - it introduces you to the universe, the story, what's going on: who's Shepard. That, and once you've played ME 2, it's very likely you won't want to play carefully through ME 1 (the inventory mechanics are much worse).

Both are great games (imo they are number 1 & 2 on the console) but do play the 1st first, not because of neccesity, but playing the second one first ruins the experience of the first game. The second just plays that much better, but overall story wise the first is much better

Yes, you should play ME1 first. Its story continues into 2. They're great games. I hope you enjoy them.

Well I would disagree with the first point, I think ME2 has a better story. But it really depends on what kind of story you like, I enjoy character stories more than event stories. I agree with the second point, you cant start a story in chapter 2. A number of things in ME2 would go right over your head and you stuck with the stock choices instead of doing it yourself. Definitely play both and in order.

I was wondering the same thing. I have heard ME1 is very short for an RPG (like 20 hours even with some sidequests)...this is kind of disapointing. How long is ME2?

I've just picked up the 2 games for 13 quid (uk). For what it's worth, I've got no idea about the second one as I've not started it yet but I'm loving the first one so far.

Yes I do very very much... fair enough if other people like it, I just find it really boring... it probs is a good game when you get into it but after 4hrs I had enough, never touched it again.

Mass Effect 1 sets up Mass Effect 2. I couldn't recommend playing ME2 without playing ME. Do yourself a favor, go to Gamestop tomorrow and buy ME1 and ME2 and then get some third game for free. Play the hell out of both ME1 and 2 and you'll have a great time.

I jumped ahead to 2 and have never played 1 before. I would suggest getting the first one because it has a story that builds up on it.

ME1 takes longer if you do everything imo but there's not a huge difference. You should definitely play the first before the second. Not only do you learn a lot about the story and backstory but it's a much more open game with more rpg elements. I preferred it to the second. I think the second was a huge disappointment by comparison, it's more like a third person shooter than an rpg.

I completely agree. Your actions in the first game have an effect in the second one.

I don't know much about the two games, except that your actions in the first affect the second game. Mass Effect 2 is gonna be $10 tomorrow at Kmart and you'll be able to buy a 1600 MS points card for another $10 together with it. You might as well get that if you're not going to buy both of them at once. Also, Wal-Mart will be price-matching competitor's ads, so if you don't want the points card, you should be able to get the game alone for $10 there.

I strongly advise playing ME1 the first time around its not necessary but when you beat it and play the second you will appreciate everything so much more. Also you'll be able to continue your game from ME1 on ME2 which will nab you a nice achievement.

You really do need to play ME1 at least once. Especially since how you play 1 will have major and minor effects on what happens in 2. It may be as minor as someone sending you an e-mail thanking you for your help before or running into someone in a bar that feels like you ruined their life, or it could be as major as
some returning party members from 1 not being alive during the events of 2
. Play 1, then 2. Some things that are flagged in 1 will also have an effect in 3.

I agree with the majority here, play ME1 first. you would miss a huge chunk of the storylineotherwise. ME2 is not simply a sequel, it's the 2nd part of a trilogy.
