It's fine and a router doesn't help make your connection any faster. A router allows you to have mulitple internet connections at once. So someone can surf the web on a computer while you play on Xbox Live. Of course, they will be using up part of your bandwith (the 1.5M/256K).

Will I be better off with the router or not ?

Like I said man, the router doesn't make your connection any faster. If you don't have to share the connection and the ethernet cable currently reaches your Xbox, then you don't need a router.

Your connection is fine. Just don't host any games.
