Have you ever tried one of those games that were critically acclaimed but didn't sell very well?

I decided to do that with psychonauts and man...what a treasure I've found. That game was awesome! its always good when you find a good game without expecting much.

I'm thinking of others like Indigo Prophecy and Okami...Hopefully those will turn out as good as psychonauts...or better.

Any ideas?

These are the games that I wanted to list. I still don't see why Tales of Vesperia didn't sell well in North America.

Viva Pinata hands down. I thought that game was really fun but I don't think it sold good.

As far as I know The Darkness didn't sell very well (Come on, someone think we could go through an entire thread like this without love for The Darkness?), you can get it for $7 at most places now! Another game I really liked that I don't believe sold well was Dark Sector, another one was Just Cause. Just Cause has like the biggest in-game world I've ever seen, a campaign that makes you want to keep going and some real nice looking environments. :D I'm interested in seeing if the world is bigger than Fuel's, which I believe has been advertised as the biggest in-game world to date.

Definitely Saboteur. Campaign is a little shaky at first but the last few missions are amazing.

I remember Bionic Commando had gotten poor reviews "can't remember the sales";however, I absolutely loved the game. Another one that falls into the same Cat. would be Too Human.

I just made a list of some of the games you guys suggested. I did some research and whats cool about these games, is that almost all of them you can get at less than $20...some less than $10. I WILL GET THEM ALL.

On a recap of what you guys suggested, here's a breakdown of units sold according to VGchartz.
The Majority of these games have good scores.

Tales of Vesperia 480,000
Dark Sector 420,000
Lost Odessey 820,000
The Darkness 520,000
Bionic Comando 210,000
The Saboteur 280,000

Some of the numbers don't look so grim now, I guess in the long term they start to pick up when people (like me) realize they are not bad games, and buy them after a while.

Shenmue, Mafia, and System Shock 2 were not available, but I'm not sure if those didn't sell well. I believe they sold considerably. Now, portal did sell well. At least as part of the Orange box. Is shenmue part of the Xbox Originals? I played it on the dreamcast a long time ago, but didn't finish it.

I really suggest you guys try Psychonauts if you haven't, its awesome

So many games to play :S

I didn't like Just Cause too much, but I absolutely loved the other two games you mentioned. I truly loved the atmosphere for The Darkness though.

eh, it wasn't really "Critically Acclaimed" at all, but I loved the Conan game that came out back in '07. but c'mon, look at the username, and look at the avatar. kind of obvious I'm a Conan the Barbarian nut...although that last boss was just off the scales in the super cheap just to be annoyingly hard department.

and I'm pretty positive that didn't do well. it's price plummted to $40 soon after launch, then 30 the next year, and I think now it's a $10 used special from GameStop (but I guss a lot of '07 titles are now, even Mass Effect)
