can someone please help me???

My xbox live gametag is different than my profile on my 360. So none of my achivement points are on my gamertag. Evrytime i try to change the name it says its already in use. What would happen if i deleted my live accounbt and remade it? would i lose the months i have? Or can i save my profile on another hardrive then save it to mine again?
