assassins creed 2 quick question

looking for a fun new game to spend my time on, do i need to have played assassins creed 1 to enjoy the sequel or to understand it

Yea. the plot was a tad convoluted, I won't say the story was something amazing, but it was good enough, gave good emotional reason for everything, it made plenty of sense (some slightly odd parts but never seen a videogame without them). If you havn't played one, thats perfectly fine, but do look up a plot summary online! Just wikipedia AC1 if you want, that works, or read it somewhere else. you will likely be a bit lost without that, but if you read a plot summary that should be plenty. And after that... it is basically AC1 but improved in every concievable way, graphics, setting, no more repetive missions, better characters, etc etc etc. I absolutely loved that game.
