While I love the run and gun style of games like Call of Duty 4, I also found my self enjoying the combat system on Mass Effect which balances some strategy along with the traditional shooting. So I was wondering what good shooters feature a bit more of the strategical approach. Online multiplayer is another must have component. If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be great. :)

I would have to suggest Rainbow 6 Vegas. Couple shots from the enemy and your dead, so you really have to plan.

Dude, that game requires a lot of strategy. How much online have you played? Each class does something that helps the team such as recon that throws motion sensors or specialist which marks vehicles so the demolitions people can lock on with rocket launchers

Actually the different classes employ different strategies. Large maps employ Demolition for their AT mines and rocket launchers but their shotguns are close to useless unless guarding the objective. Snipers are good for vehicle destruction and long range kills but they have almost no close up abilities. Every class has it's strengths and weaknesse depending on the map and talent of the player. Your choice of class and strategy using can make all the difference in a match. There's some food for thought smartass.

Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway. Just beat it a month ago, very good game. Good FPS that's heavy in tactics. You control up to 3 squads simultaneously, flanking and setting up suppressive fire. Has a good cover system too.

considering another Bad company is coming out this year I think the servers will get shut down on the current one so ghost recon, team fortress 2 and rainbow six are the better choices

I've played Bad Company, and it was reasonably strategic, I ended up trading it in though which I later regretted. Rainbow 6 sounds like a pretty popular choice, I might have to check that out. Are a lot of people still playing online?

yes there is still a strong community in R6 vegas 2 because it offers a different experience then other shooters. its not a run and gun type of game
