Here is a quot from this article. http://www.practical-home-theater-guide.com/contrast-ratio.html
"Contrast is the ratio between the white and black parts in an image. The larger the contrast ratio of a display device, the greater is the difference between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks a video display or projector can show."
I think that the article gives a good overview of contrast ratio and how important it is. It shows how it has been over-hyped by manufacturers lately. However, it is still importantb because, "There is no doubt that contrast is an important attribute in a display or video projector performance. It is contrast that helps make an image 'pop-up' in that it also affects our perception of color as well as image brightness."
The article describes hows important contrast ratio really is, and (something I forgot to add) how important gray-scale performance is.
Overall though, my point is that you should make sure tha TV can display dark scenes well, and as the article suggests, don't get to caught up in numbers. LCDs are great at bright colors, but traditionally have not given blacks as good as plasmas. I would aska aslespersonat the storeto play a DVD with dark scenes on the TV before you buy, if possible. In the end though, it all comes down to how much you like the picture personally.
