TNA'S BIG ANNOUNCEMENT APPARENTLY IS ... (AND DON'T GET YOUR HOPES UP)
by Mike Johnson @ 2:58:00 PM on 9/21/2006

The Wrestling Observer is reporting that TNA's big surprise announcement this weekend will be the return of Vince Russo, who will join the TNA creative end (no word on an on camera role, but if history is any indication...) There were rumors of this making the rounds over the last 24 hours.

Earlier today, on the PWInsider.com Hotline, I noted that the announcement needed to be something major or the company would be veering into "Vince Russo WCW territory." Well, Toto, if the report is true, welcome to Atlanta.

:|. Russo was a great booker. There was no way to save WCW by the time he had put his hands on it, however he admitedly didn't help it at all. No one ever gives him at least half the credit he deserves.

Well, they managed to survive his first run, but this certainly seems to be another in the string of bad decisions TNA has made since they got the Spike TV deal.

I mean, I guess there is potential for him to inject some life to Impact and TNA.  But, on the other hand, WCW was alive and thriving before he got there, too, and WCW was in a lot better shape than TNA, too.

Plus, its his fault Jarrett ever won a damn World Title in the first place.

Here's a little more to the story, like who Russo will be replacing on the team and PWTorch's Wade Keller's thoughts:

Dixie Carter has made a decision to shake-up the creative team, and bring in Vince Russo to be the primary creative force on the booking team, which will still involve Jeff Jarrett and Dutch Mantell. Scott D'Amore and Mike Tenay will not be part of the committee.

KELLER'S ANALYSIS: If this is TNA's "big surprise," Dixie Carter greaty overstated what this means to the wrestling industry. What could change the wrestling industry is if TNA fixes it's problems and begins to promote a better booked product. But hiring Russo and booking a better product are not necessarily the same thing. At this point, any chance is good, but there are obvious concerns with Russo given his track record as since working closely with Vince McMahon, he has not experiened success. Russo being brought on board extends the liklihood that Jeff Jarrett will remain the central figure in the promotion, as the two are very good friends (who, like many friends do, have gone through difficulties and disputes with each other). Dutch Mantell is also considered an extension of Jarrett. So this move appears to be leaving in place the primary factor that most believe is what is holding TNA back. That said, the booking was a problem, and Russo will at least create change

If anyone cares, here is different perspective on the news:

http://www.411mania.com/wrestling/news/45531/Major-Potential-Spoiler-On-TNA//s-//Huge-Announcement//.htm

As reported earlier, TNA is set to make an announcement at the No Surrender PPV that they claim will re-write wrestling history.

It appears that announcement will be the return of Vince Russo who has been hired by TNA in a panic move due to the recent decline in Impact ratings. The move is a surprise since
WWE and UFC ratings are also down, not just TNA. The booking team will now be Russo, Jeff Jarrett, and Dutch Mantel. Mike Tenay and Scott D'Amore have been removed from the team.

Interestingly enough, TNA has told Russo that he can't book any sleaze on TNA shows.

Wrestlers will be told about Russo's hiring this weekend.

Russo was the main WWE writer back in the glory days of the Attitude Era, coming up with much of the "Crash TV" aspect of WWE programming back then. Since then, he had a stint in WCW that was a failure and even worked for TNA early in the promotion's life.

http://www.411mania.com/wrestling/news/45545/More-On-TNA//s-Surprise-Announcement.htm

As reported earlier, Vince Russo is headed back to TNA to head up the creative direction of the product and will likely be the "major announcement" that TNA is hyping for the No Surrender PPV on Sunday.

Several TNA personalities were told about the move today with many already concerned that Russo will move the product away from in-ring matches (which most argue is TNA's strong point) and towards skits and soap-opera style storylines. Many are also upset because if Russo is the big announcement for the PPV (or the only announcement), it is a huge disappointment and will upset many fans. Many also take it as a sign that Russo has not changed, since overhyping stuff has always been something he has done.

There is also a lot of curiousity as to what this means for Jim Cornette. Cornette and Russo have been bitter enemies for years now. The idea for now is to keep the two as far from each other as possible

According to this, there is still might be chance that Vince Russo is NOT the "major announcement" promised for the pay-per-view:

http://www.411mania.com/wrestling/news/45548/Even-More-On-TNA//s-Planned-Changes.htm

Vince Russo officially started work as the head of TNA creative on Tuesday. As reported, he will head up a creative team consisting of Dutch Mantel and Jeff Jarrett as an editor of sorts. Mike Tenay is out and will focus on commentary. Scott D'Amore is also out but will likely stay in TNA and be given another backstage role. Jeremy Borash is also out and will likely focus more on the production side and on his on-air role.

In a somewhat interesting note that may give TNA fans some hope, many backstage in TNA are under the impression that the hiring of Russo is NOT the big surprise that TNA promises for this Sunday. It may very well end up being the surprise, but at least a few people think that the surprise is something else.

Umm, are you serious? WCW may have been in dire striaghts, but he was responsible for the absolute worst booking WCW ever received.

WCW was in great shape before Russo came along. Russo is also credited with the McMahon-Austin storyline and the Attitude Era. This may be his only highlight of his career. I'm pretty sure Russo had a lot more dumb ideas and if it wasnt for Vince Russo would of ran the WWF into the ground.
