I've been thinking about making some kind of topic (or chart or video) showing how video game graphics have evolved over the years, by showcasing the best-looking video game (or two) from each year.

I'll start from the very beginning, from the 1950s to the 1960s...

1952 - OXO

1958 - Tennis For Two (Analog)

1962 - Spacewar (Mainframe, MIT)

It's no surprise that the best graphics belonged to the arcade machines as it didn't really matter if they took up 4 sq.f of room.

When you get to the 90's and 00's though, it's going to be purely a matter of taste.

I don't know, Coleco had perfect and sometimes better arcade conversions than the arcade for a good time. Also lack of PC games jag?

we're still in the 80's so PCs weren't really a factor when it came to graphics.

it wasn't until the 90's that PC started becoming more prevalent in the graphics department

Vector graphics were technically advanced at the time, but unfortunately they weren't considered among the best-looking games back then because of the lack of colour. So yeah, I kind of skipped them over, though you can always feel free to post some of the more impressive looking vector games yourself.

For the 90s and 2000s, I think I'll probably just focus on the most technically impressive graphics, since artistic graphics would be too subjective. In the mean time, feel free to make some of your own suggestions.

Cliff Hanger was a laserdisc game (i.e. a Dragon's Lair clone) by Stern that used various clips from Hayao Miyazaki's Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro, which at the time was largely unknown in North America (long before Miyazaki became a famous name in animation).

That is basically the only Lupin that did well so i have no idea about unknown in north america, it did decent at the very least. Also, Miyazaki is still not too relevant outside of Japan(you are probably going to say that's not true, but it is.) outside of a few hits.

Both consoles and PC's were technically inferior to arcade machines up until the late 90s, hence the lack of console and PC games so far.

I haven't seen any PC games from 1982 that looked as good as ColecoVision or Atari 5200 console games, let alone arcade games that year.

What do you mean by "relevant"? Miyazaki's been "relevant" to Hollywood's animation industry since at least the late 80s (with both Disney and Pixar crediting him as a big influence since then). If you mean mainstream popularity though, then sure, the only time he's been "mainstream" in America was probably the early-mid 2000s.

CGA (or even EGA) and PC speaker do not make for a good gaming system. 4-16 colours vs the 32 colours the Amiga could display , Atari ST was also 16 colours but I think the maximum colour pallete was higher (which is why Atari ST usually looks a bit better than EGA) for most of those games, the C64 (and later the Amiga/ST) versions were almost always better, of course it doesn't mean the games were bad, Commander Keen and Crystal Caves were both EGA games and were still great games.

I don't know, EGA can be compared to console games of the day:

not really, the NES and Master System both have higher colour counts than EGA mode, nevermind CGA with its 4 colours (the colour counts were 25 for the NES, 32 for the SMS , vs 16 colours for EGA) , and you can clearly see it, the only thing the PC really beats them in is resolution.

also,  if youre going to put Commander Keen Episode 4 in there , keep in mind that game came out in 1991, by that time the SNES ,MD and TG-16 were out, and it really does not compete with those systems.

but then I wasn't even comparing it to consoles, I was comparing it to other computers out at the time, in particular the Atari ST and the Amiga , both of which had better visuals and sound over the PC with its EGA and PC speaker

now of course when VGA became popular in the early 90s (there were a few VGA games in the late 80s, but very few  like Indiana Jones and the last Crusade) , and sound cards like the Soundblaster came out , the PC started to over take the consoles and other computers in visuals and sound, but until that point....not really.

Firstly, that 8-bit PC port of Congo Bongo doesn't look any better than the ColecoVision console port:

Which dates? I've checked each one to make sure the dates are accurate.

And yes, I did include a few computer games above. The Sharp X68000 and FM Towns computers in particular were pretty much the closest thing to arcade quality in the late 80s.

I haven't included a single console game yet though, but we'll start seeing a few more of those too in the 90s.

[QUOTE="Holyspirit-Xbox"]Some of your dates are off, but your doing alright for the most part. Although around 89 computers had some kigs as well (not pc.)Jag85

Which dates? I've checked each one to make sure the dates are accurate.

And yes, I did include a few computer games above. The Sharp X68000 and FM Towns computers in particular were pretty much the closest thing to arcade quality in the late 80s.

I haven't included a single console game yet though, but we'll start seeing a few more of those too in the 90s.

the X68000 was an arcade machine, or rather , was used as the basis for the Capcom CPS-1. the FM towns interestingly, is more or less just a modified PC , it had a 386 CPU and a a modified VGA card (with some extra abilities like being able to overlay high res EGA over low res VGA , so you could have a high colour, but low res VGA image with high res EGA text, since text is only 1 colour anyway)

More or less. The Sharp X68000 was a home computer modeled after arcade technology in 1987, and in turn was used as a development machine by Capcom for their CPS1 games up until the early 90s. The X68000 more or less remained the most powerful home gaming system up until the Neo Geo arcade-based console released in 1990.

The FM Towns, on the other hand, was pretty much a PC pushed to its limits in 1989, adding some arcade features to the PC architecture. It was also the first computer with a built-in CD-ROM drive and an operating system bootable from CD (a precursor to Windows 95). Its resolution could go up to 1024x1024 pixels in low colour (like the X68000), or up to a 16.78 million colour palette (or 32,768 simultaneous colours, half that of the X68000) in low resolution. The reason for that overlay feature (combining two separate display modes) was mainly because high resolution was required for Japanese kanji text, but high colour was required for arcade-quality graphics.

Overall, the X68000 had the more advanced graphics, while the FM Towns had the more advanced audio and multimedia capabilities.

I kind of went overboard there... I probably need to be more decisive with which game or two to pick for each year, rather than posting so many games for the same year.

A lot of the arcade ports to the Commodore Amiga matched the quality and sound on the arcade versions.

jun_aka_pekto

Depends on which arcade games you mean. As a general rule, when it came to 8-bit arcade games, you often needed a 16-bit home system for an arcade-quality port. And for 16-bit arcade games, you often needed a 32-bit home system for an arcade-quality port, or a very expensive 16-bit home system based on arcade technology (specifically the Sharp X68000 computer or Neo Geo console).

In the Amiga's case, being a 16-bit computer, its ports of 8-bit arcade games were more or less arcade-perfect. But when it came to 16-bit arcade games, its ports often fell well below the arcade originals (such as Out Run, for example). It did eventually catch up to 16-bit arcade technology much later on, but it was a bit too late by then.

Shenmue_Jehuty

Gunblade NY was probably the most impressive looking game on the Sega Model 2 arcade system. And the same possibly goes for LA Machineguns on the Sega Model 3. They really pushed their respective arcade systems to the limits.
