- Keep your discussions around what belongs here: platforms, games, developers, publishers, and stats.
- Don't quote more than one image in your post.
- Do NOT post or bump extremely abusive discussions (adult material/illegal activities/illegal advertising/etc).

iirc SS1 is freeare. There's a copy ropaming the internet you could download. You don't have to fiddle with DOS, just click on the game and it will automatically configure.

    O rly?

    Yeah, here!

Very easy to set up, and includes some mods and improvements to make the game more playable and smooth. Played SS1 last year, and it's still a great game... definitely check it out!

There was already a thread in SW about it a little wile ago.

Anyway, for anyone interested, the gameplay has aged well. Unlike Deus Ex (the only game which is comparable, and which has a ton of elements thus did not age as well), the game is a straightfoward RPG/Horror with a great level design and immersive atmosphere. The cyberpunk atmosphere is so thick and disturbing.

You're going to suck at the beginning because it is an RPG. Wen you fire a gun, it has a kickback because of the inexperienced character. Once you put a decent amount of points into your agility and weapons, the gunplay is good, there's no kickback, just aim and blissfully shoot. That is, if you have ammo. And if you have a decent amount of stats in your repair skill so you can fix your weapon if it breaks. You can also modify your weapon, to improve it.

The models (weapons, NPCs) are ugly as sin, and so are the graphics. For that, you'll need the God sent of graphical mods. The Lord bless everyone who created them.

Just unzip everything in the 'DataPermanentMods' located in your System Shock 2 folder, and you're set to go.

How is the multiplayer coop working in the GOG version? I was thinking about buying a few copies of this for me and my friends to play. I used to love this game back in the day.

Yeah I'm playing through it right now as a hmm.... Navy-ist.
Oh, and I am totally getting the same vibe as with Doom 3, that I am totally playing this game as if I'm there and not just playing a game.
I.E. crawling through entire game and being extremely anxious. I even got back into the habit of pausing the game every few minutes to take a breath.

If you play a game like me, as if every monster can kill you, it does make the game a lot longer I imagine

It's a demanding game that may feel a little overwhelming at times, especially if you're not experienced with older and more complex/convoluted games (the levels are huge), but if you DL that freeware version posted above, you'll find it's very playable for such an old game, both due to the overall game quality, and due to some included mods.

I'd say its definitely worth playing... though I don't expect everyone will find it enjoyable.

Give it a try, see how you feel about it!

Too many current and near future games to play to bother with a 14 year old game I've already played.

Stay away from the mod that upgrades the midwife model. The vanilla model looks better and is far more creepy.

First time players should also go Navy career and invest in Standard Weapons/Hacking/Cyber-Affinity in the beginning. ...You'll have an easier time.

Ammo is sparse so  the wrench is gonna be your best friend.
