Seems like fear is a central aspect of gun culture. Whether it be fear of the government, fear of strangers, etc.

Some people just go way overboard with it. I used to live in a really nasty, ghetto part of town, and I had a loaded gun in the house at all times. I still wasn't shooting the door every time there was an unexpected knock. Worst case scenario, like if there was a knock, and no one aswered when I yelled "who is it?", I'd take a peek out the window, if it was someone shady looking (or no one at all), I'd just make sure my gun was within reach, and wait. The only time it ever went any farther than that, this guy knocked extremely hard like 10 times, then started trying to turn the knob (it was locked), then he started tapping on the window by the door. So I opened the door, with my .45 colt revolver in my hand, but out of view of the doorway. The guy started saying something incoherently (he was a meth addict. I've seen more than enough to recognize it), so I told him he had 5 seconds to get out my sight. He started saying something else, so I brought out the gun, cocked it, and started counting down from 5. He was gone by the time I hit 2.

What is love? Baby, don't hurt me. Don't hurt me. No more.

that actually happens alot. Burglars break into a house they thought was empty, take a bunch of sh!t, then, on their way out, they hear someone. Fearing the idea of witnesses, they go on a hunt.

Hmm, I don't know anyone that owns a gun out of fear. I'm not sure that is accurate.

You're not going to get an objective view of any subject if all you know of it is what the media portrays. As someone else just said, it's preparedness, not fear. Although there certainly are some who do it out of fear, and they're doing it wrong.

Why do they feel the need to be prepared? People prepare out of fear of the uncertain and fear has always been the emotion to drive preparedness. Fear isn't a bad thing as being prepared isn't bad but to say fear is not an aspect of this is a clear misunderstanding of motive.
