I ran over a screw so I took it to the shop so they could take it out and patch it back up. The service was quick and simple, but I noticed that they scratched my rim. I confronted the guy and said that he better not expect me to pay him for the service since his guy messed up my rim. He was ok about it and let me go, but I honestly think they owe me a whole new rim. Is it too late to go back?

You might have a case but it will likely be more trouble than it's worth.

It's a wheel. Rim is a slang term that I find silly, especially for an OEM wheel.

It's a wheel. Rim is a slang term that I find silly, especially for an OEM wheel.

Rim - a circular strip of metal forming the connection between an automobile wheel and tire, either permanently attached to or removable from the wheel.

This case it is permanently attached, as in, no hub-cap or spokes. If I said "my rim is scratched" and took a picture of my car, then you'd have a case, since I have hub-caps, not an inseparable wheel and rim (commonly and more simply known as 'rims') and if the wheel itself was scratched... I have hub-caps.

He can't remove the wheel portion from the rim, so he'll have to buy a new rim and wheel. It's clumsy to have to say rim and wheel every two seconds, let's just call them 'rims' for short; or should re-name the rims to wheels too, then just refer to them as wheels (though this will be odd when dealing with spoked wheels, since the rim is actually separate from the hub)

If you're going by that definition then the rim is not scratched, the wheel is. The rim (according to the definition you posted) is the part of the wheel that the tire is in contact with, that part is not scratched. What is scratched here is the spoke connecting the rim to the rest of the wheel.

A wheel is a wheel. There is no need to call it a "rim" or a "rim and wheel."

Anyway, I just find it silly for a grown man (who's not on "Pimp My Ride") to call a wheel a rim.
