I've been a longtime shoot-em up fan. I just can't get enough of the twitchy trigger-finger action of a good space-ship, airplane, or whatever it may be shooter.

I'm not a great player, though. I'm not good enough to be able to play the "bullet-hell" sub-genre of shoot-em ups. And the "cute-em ups" sub-genre just doesn't appeal to me because I don't like cutesy things, I'm a child of the 80s where everything we liked was violent. So you won't see those two sub-genres on my list.

My Picks (from what I've personally played):

    • Atari 2600 - Defender
    • NES - Gradius
    • SNES - Raiden Trad
    • Sega Master System - R-Type
    • Sega Genesis - Thunder Force II (I know, everyone tells me 3 & 4 are better, I just haven't played them yet)
    • Sega CD - Lords of Thunder
    • Sega Saturn - Darius Gaiden
    • Playstation - Thunder Force V
    • Playstation 2 - Raiden III
    • TurboGrafx-16 - Blazing Lazers
    • XBox 360 - Raiden IV
    • PC - Raptor
    • Game Boy - R-Type DX
    • GameBoy Advance - R-Type III: Third Lightning

Which is your favorite shoot-em up on each system?

I know you've said that you don't consider yourself good enough to go for bullet hell shooters, but I got into them when Mushihimesama Futari came out on the 360 a few years ago. It's easier to get into it and score well than you might think, as you have a tiny hitbox, and the game will slow down to allow you to negotiate complex bullet patterns.

If you haven't tried it out it's probably worth downloading the trial for Guwange on XBLA and seeing how you like it.

I was sure you were going to say Mars Matrix on Dreamcast, I've seen you mention it a few times.

As far as 'ship-based' shooters, here are my favorites:
    NES - Gradius or Gyruss
TG-16 / CD - Gate of Thunder or Lords of Thunder
SNES - Gradius III or Super R-Type
    Genesis - Truxton
Neo Geo - Aero Fighters or Blazing Star
    PlayStation - Einhander
    Saturn - DoDonPachi
Dreamcast - Gigawing, Ikaruga or Rez
    PlayStation 2 - Gradius 3 & 4
Xbox - Panzer Dragoon Orta (maybe not considered a shoot-em-up)
    PSP - Gradius Collection
Xbox 360 - Rez HD (maybe not considered a shoot-em-up)

I also enjoy a lot of the 'run-and-gun' games/series' on most of those systems, like 19XX, Contra, Metal Slug, Commando, Expendable, Sunset Riders, Turrican, Vectorman and The Red Star.

haha, I have :p. I've mostly been bringing it up because of how badly I want it. I played it a while back at a retro game shop in town and was blown away by it, however I haven't played it long enough to make a proper judgement, and also it doesn't quite compare with Ikaruga from what I have played. Many Treasure games, especially their flagship SHMUPs (Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga) are a bit untouchable imo. Even excellent shooters like Shienryu, Dodonpachi, Raiden, Giga Wing and Mars Matrix don't compare. The only SHMUP I've played that compares with with either of the Treasure SHMUPs in MUSHA on the Genesis/MS.

Like I said in my post earlier, I became a bit of a Cave nerd after getting Mushihimesama Futari. I don't have an import console but the company made a bunch of region free releases, of which that's the most accessible, and a personal favourite.

Europe has actually done okay with localised versions of Deathsmiles, Akai Katana and DoDonPachi - all of which I would highly recommend.

Maybe trade it in for Akai Katana , another horizontal shooter altought the scoring system in AK is sometimes confusing .

DDP DFK didn't click with me straight away but now I love it , you can learn all about scoring here :

my problem with Dondonpachi is that quite simply, it was beyond my skill level, whereas Deathsmiles wasn't

Then make sure to make it a Japanese one because the 360 ain't region free like the PS3.
