I didn't see any threads on this so I'll make one.

Rocket finally posted a blog detailing what is happening with Dayz standalone.

It is still being worked on, but they are developing the game more comprehensively than he initially planned. The UI and Inventory system is being overhauled completely with some changes including item durability and disease tracking on items.

Ivan Buchta, still in a Greek prison, has been giving advice through letters which is a rather amazing fact.

A closed beta of 500-1000 players is coming to test the new architecture.

Awesome. If they do it, they might as well do it right. I can already see that Day Z Standalone will be a much different game from the already satisfying DayZ mod.

I feel bad for the guys in prison, even if it was stupid. Perhaps, they really didn't know what they were doing. Even then, writing letters from prison for game development, that's dedication. But all these major changes like UI overhaul are too be expected. Especially the UI. I'll be honest, I have big expectations for DayZ standalone on how much they improve it over the DayZ mod. If they pull this off, they'll have my money day one.

this is rather exciting. i really dont care how long it takes, as long as there are no game-breaking bugs and there are a good amount of extra features.

I guess when your in prison you have more time to think of cool features. I think CoD devs should go to prison so the next game when they get out would be this amazing creative game cause they have been thinking about it for 5 years. >.>

I hope it's not as easy to hack. Day Z was ruined by pathetic douchebags who only wanted to ruin other peoples fun.

Can't wait for it, Rocket seems to do a fantastic job with it too, guy seems like a real bro.

As long as the architecture is locked down and it is more hacker proof, I'll be super happy.

The new changes will be great and I can't wait for the standalone. I've been kind of put off the mod due to the nature of what it has become or people just mowing each other down all the damn time, hopefully the standalone will make zeds more threatening and less easy to dupe and avoid. Right now they're an annoyance than a threat. If they were harder people would actually work together I think

One of their main priorities is making it more difficult to hack I believe. Many servers already have anti-hack software separate from what Arma 2 uses, and I have seen far fewer hackers in the game in the last couple months, granted I have only played a few times during that period.

Back in September it seemed like I ran into a hacker every single time I played, so it has certainly improved since then.

I'll definitely give this new genre a try once the DayZ standalone is out.

Should be good. I hope he keeps development up, the game's got a lot of unrealised potential. Don't go all Minecraft where the game's development grinds to a hault.

The whole idea behind DayZ is really cool. I've avoided buying Arma 2 though, by the time I had heard about the game enough to be interested there was already rumors of them making a standalone. As such I'll just wait till they finish it.

I think fixing the AI and interface is already a huge improvement over the mod. Also does anybody know if it is using Arma II engine or Arma III?

They're using a "2.5" engine (the one they used for Take On Helicopters).
