"The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven tale about a modern plague decimating mankind. Nature encroaches upon civilization, forcing remaining survivors to kill for food, weapons and whatever they can find. Joel, a ruthless survivor promised a dying friend he would rescue Ellie, a fourteen-year-old orphan, from a nearby boarding house for an unknown reason. Some time after the escape, military authorities find out and begin pursuing them as they commence their journey west across what remains of the United States."

"It has been 20 years since a fungi has been on the loose, killing people and re-animating their corpses. The military has the United States under martial law and is keeping everyone in a quarantine zone to stay away from the infection. The quarantine zone has many checkpoints and gives constant body scans for any signs of fungi, and any of those who do will be executed immediately."

XII. Concept

"The concept for The Last of Us arose after watching BBC nature documentary Planet Earth, which showed the cordyceps fungus infected ants, resulting in taking over its brain and producing growths from its head; the idea that the fungus could infect humans became the initial idea for the game. Major artistic inspirations included the movies No Country for Old Men and The Road, comic The Walking Dead, historical novel City of Thieves, Richard Matheson's 1954 novel I Am Legend and the films it inspired."

"While the fungus epidemic is the main backdrop of the game, The Last of Us is not a "zombie game", but "a love story about a father-daughter-like relationship", influenced in part by the sequence between Nathan Drake and Tenzin, his Tibetan guide, in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Joel is a survivor and anti-hero, and Ellie is a 14 year-old girl with no experience of the world pre-apocalypse. The composer for the game will be Gustavo Santaolalla. The team wanted to focus on emotion with the soundtrack rather than horror"

"On release of the initial trailer for the game Dead Island, the team was concerned that the two games would be largely similar, both exploring the human or emotional side to an apocalyptic event. However, on release of the aforementioned game, the team realised that the gameplay did not match up to that showed by the trailer; by contrast, lead designer Neil Druckmann feels that the trailer for The Last of Us is "very representative of what we're going for". Druckmann also stated that he wants the story in The Last of Us to raise the bar for other video game developers, as he feels the standard of story-telling is not as good as it should be within the industry."

"Ellie, an orphan, is very clever and mature for her age, and will do whatever it takes to keep Joel and herself alive. She takes orders from Joel as well, but at the same time "doesn't need any babysitting at all". She has no knowledge of the world prior to the events of the incident and is obsessed with culture from the past including music and books. Being raised in such an evironment, Ellie is considerably rash, impulsive, and temperamental, and doesn't faze at the notion of using violence as a means to an end or vulgar words as a way of expressing how she feels. At the same time, however, she maintains a particular innocence in how she still has yet to see the darkest sides of human nature and retains a susceptible trust in people that she hasn't yet lost, and serves as the juxtaposition to Joel's weary, morose outlook on life. "

XV. Joel (Age: 40s)

"Joel has been described as a "violent thug, a brutal killer, and a torturer." He has shown some combat abilities, and also seems to be familiar with many different weapons. Other than Ellie, it seems that he does not care about other survivors. He has revealed to Ellie that he's "been on both sides" in response to knowing about a hunter ambush, and this dark past likely contributed to his experience as a hardened survivalist. The plague began around his late 20s, and before rescuing Ellie he was a man who ran drugs and weapons through the quarantine zone in Boston. Joel is also knowledgeable in surviving the rough post-infected world."

XVI. Bill

"Bill is a skilled mechanic that knows how to fix up cars and assemble things from broken items and spare parts and is short tempered. Bill is an extremely paranoid person, often wearing a gas mask to protect himself from the infection, as the disease could kill him with a single breath. He is very cautious and inevitably strict about strangers, always making sure to check whether they are infected or not. Him and Joel have history, as they have met before the events of The Last of Us, and Bill owes him many favors."

XVII. Tess

"Tess is a survivor that at one point had a relationship with Joel. Tess and Joel subscribe to the same dog-eat-dog philosophy. They survive by being willing to do what others cant or wont. Her trust in and loyalty towards Joel runs deep. However, secretly, she questions whether Joel shares the same emotions that she feels for him.

H. Weapons and Gameplay

XX. Gameplay

"The Last of Us plays from a third-person perspective. The player will have control of Joel as he trying to protect Ellie. However, this is not an escort game. Ellie will have her own AI and try to stay out of sight from the enemy or help Joel in any way possible. Naughty Dog is integrating a new AI system called "Balance of Power" that works very realistic compared to their previous games. Since the setting is post-apocalyptic, the resources are going to be scarce. Joel is not going to be roaming around blasting a machine gun. A single bullet from a pistol can kill an enemy."

"Depending on the weapon Joel is holding is how the human enemies will react. If Joel is holding a handgun, the enemy will be very cautious and try their best not to get shot. If there are multiple enemies, they will try their best to flank Joel and suprise him. They are not going to stay in one place and occasionally peek out to shoot. Joel could be holding a brick and the enemy will still be cautious, but they will not be as alarmed. If the only thing Joel has is a 2x4, the enemy may charge believing they have the advantage."

"Naughty Dog believes the more they humanize and add psychology to the human enemies, the more scary they become. If Joel kills one of the group, they may become very upset and push harder to reach Joel or kill him. They may warn each other of danger and try a different strategy. Also, if Joel achieves the upper hand, they may realize this, become scared and probably run away. Unlike Uncharted, Joel will not be able to just hide and recover health with time. He will will have to apply health packs, but try to find the time to do so because the enemy may see that he is doing so and flank him."

"Humans not infected by the Cordyceps unilateralis; Most of the survivors you encounter will be enemies wanting to kill you and loot anything useful from your dead bodies."

"The Hunters are ruthless killers who have rebelled against the martial law. Anyone coming into their city who is not part of their faction is called a 'tourist' and will be killed. One tactic they use is to pretend to be wounded or hurt. Once someone stops to help, the rest of the faction will attack and then steal the tourist's supplies."

"Joel and Ellie are amongst the varied and few other survivors found throughout the game. Unfortunately, not all survivors are friendly and many will take every chance they can seize to hunt down others for their food and weapons."

"The Infected creatures were once human and/or animal, but have since undergone a strange mutation by a specialized strain of Cordyceps unilateralis. The host's physical appearance has completely changed in comparison to how the host typically looked prior to infection, and all ability to think and behave as normal has degraded."

XXV. Ophiocordyceps unilaterali

"The bulk of humanity has been infected with what seems to be an invasive parasite similar in symptoms and effects to a Cordyceps fungus. Ophiocordyceps unilateralis is a fungus which is evidently evolved from a Cordyceps strain, the prime difference being that this strain infects either only human subjects, or, (as the eptymology would suggest), any living host available. The other main difference is that, instead of directing the host into a convenient place for the fungus to grow and spread spores to new hosts, the Ophiocordyceps unilateralis would direct them into harm's way in a classic, "zombielike" quest to destroy uninfected individuals. As with many other details about the fungus, it is unclear whether this makes infection of new hosts easier, or if it is simply a byproduct of overloading the human brain (or degenerating it into a primal state). It is unknown if the subject can be infected alive or if it requires the host to be dead."

"An opportunity for protection against the variable dangers that happen upon the path of Joel and Ellie. Ammo is a scarce resource, so players will have to conserve their ammunition."

Naughty Dog and Dark Horse Comics are teaming up to make an original comic that's a prequel for The Last of Us. It will show the origins of Ellie's life, and is divided into four parts. The Last of Us: American Dreams will be released Spring 2013.

L.Multiplayer (Factions)

"Strength in numbers, Survival of the fittest."

"Decades after the initial Cordyceps outbreak, and the decimation of the population, if you're not infected, then you're left fighting for scraps to survive. Unfortunately for you, there are many others like you fighting for the same limited resoources, no matter the cost. However, banding together with other survivors gives you the strength in numbers and a better chance to survive and stay alive. The best and only way to survive is to take the lives of those that seek to take yours. Whether you side with the Fireflies or the Hunters means little. What matters is how hard you try to keep your clan healthy and strong by securing supplies and making it back alive."

"The premise is that The Last Of Us multiplayer involves the player choosing to join one of two teams two groups of humans taken from the singleplayer portion of the game. This initial selection is permanent, and cannot be changed until either completing the "story" that frames the entire multiplayer experience, or having your clan wiped out. To grow your clan, you'll need to win multiplayer matches, while collecting supplies and completing objectives. Every match progresses the "story" one day forward, and you'll see your population rise and fall based on your success and failure.You can sign into Facebook and have the game auto-populate your faction with real-life friends. As your clan grows, you'll see various status updates"

"There is a robust clan system where you can recruit survivors into your clan. You can then send them out on missions for supplies, to rescue other survivors, and train to repel or attack Infecteds or Marauders. Clan members can die from attacks, starvation, or sickness. They can also become infected. Members will join your clan depending on the matches you win, the supplies you have and attacks you repel."

Supply Raid
"A team of four survivors must survey the area and find supplies for their arsenal. In addition, feed and nourish the sick and unhealthy members of your faction or clan. Each map is designed especially for stealth. Supply chests are out in the open and dangerous to approach without teammates, however it contains supplies vital for you and your clan. All while being met by an enemy team, fighting for the very same supplies."

Survivors
"Survival is the key and teamwork is an optional factor. You must eliminate everyone else until you are left standing at the end of the match. It is a best of seven rounds format and supplies go to the team that wins four of seven rounds by having the last man or woman standing. There's no respawning, but you can buy weapons and ammo between rounds and anything you buy or craft carries with you until the end of the game."

Survival Raid
"There is a set number of lives both teams have and the first team that reduces the other teams' lives to zero wins. You will continue to respawn until your team's number reaches zero. Between respawns, supplies you collected carry over."

Great thread. Hyping this AAAE, it just looks absolutely fantastic. I more excited about the AI and "Balance of Power" system more than anything else. AI in games hasn't really grown leaps and bounds like it should have this last decade with all of the hardware available to PC and consoles so I'm glad to see Naughty Dog really pushing it forward. Hoping to have a replacement PS3 by May so I can play this.AcidSoldner

The previews for this game have already put me off it. It's so serious and aware of itself as a Very Mature Apocalyptic Experience With a Touch of the Human Element®.

Survival-horror lite is what it seems to me; another de-genrification taking things "back to basics" or whatever, with a stripped down UI and "understated" (read: ham-handed) presentation. Gag me with a f*cking spoon.

Also, how many are betting that Joel will die to let Ellie survive in the end...i really hope ND surprise us with a different ending, but i guess this could be the safer ending for this game.
