J.R.R. Tolkien's War in Middle Earth is the best game based on the IP, old-school or not.
For gamecube..the two movies ones (Two Tower, Return of the King) as well as Third Age are the best ones

Fanboy: People who refuse to own a product made by a company in competition with the company who made the product they bought and supported because "it sucks". Then they treat the item(s) they do own as being creations of perfection (NOTHING IS PERFECT). They also can't provide any real reason why the other product does "suck"..."It just does!"...This might sum up the GameCube games: http://cinemassacre.com/2012/11/30/lord-of-the-rings-gamecube-review/ Though I don't know if the same games on the original Xbox were any better.- Please wait. Now playing: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (360), Pokemon: SoulSilver (DS)
Return of the King (GameCube) by far.- Please wait. Quick reply will be available shortly.
War in Middle Earth is the best by far. Both RPGs released for DOS were pretty decent compared to other LoTR games.

Yes, it is. I don't even remember what it is called exactly but it was good back then, not sure if it would still be any fun.

The GBA versions of the second two movie games are really good too, some of the best dungeon crawlers on handhelds of any generation.

The Two Towers for the PS2 was always my favourite, I didn't like Return of the King as much, didn't seem to flow as fast and have that same hectic atmosphere, though that's just me remembering the final battle at Helms Deep in TT, man, so many orcs...
