We don't really have an OS Forum so I thought posting here would be the most correct:

    I have 2 x HDD with 2 Windows 7 Installed.

So basically when my PC starts, the boot menu asks me what Windows I want to go with.

If I were to UPGRADE ONE OF THEM to Windows 8, will it still recognize the other Windows 7?

I want to upgrade my main but want to keep my other as Win7.

    Thanks

    Intel i7 3770 3.40Ghz | Asus Sabertooth | 32GB 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM | 240GB SSD | GTX680 4GB

No point getting win 8 when you have 7.

    loosingENDS Wisdom:

My PC is not a gaming PC in the sense that does not have a GPU that will run games in playable frame rates, other than that is a DX11 GPU that will run any game in any setting

    Was xbox 360 based on a 9800 pro of 2003 ?

No, it was based on a 8800GTX of 2006

No point getting win 8 when you have 7.

Thanks but with all due respect, that wasn't my question.

I have Windows 8 already, am building a new rig end of February so wanted to try 8 now on my current rig to decide which OS I install from scratch on the new one.

I don't have a definitive answer for you, but in general, Windows is REALLY bad about overwriting the MBR (Master Boot Record). If you want to dual boot (even 2 Windows versions) you typically have to re-write the MBR after installing Windows.

Yeah, like I said before, I just want to try it out on my current PC until I build a new rig.

Just want to upgrade my Win7 cause I don't want to spend time installing all the stuff back.

Yeah, I thought about making a VM but basically, tbh, I wouldn't use it. If I had Win8 as my main I can give it a good home based test.

When u say it will be fine, what do u mean?

and create a new Boot Menu?

and while I'm here.....how well does it upgrade? I've only installed it from format.

    badly
    or when i did it
    it broke my msiexec

apparently other people had better luck

and yes it should create a new bootmenu for you to select

worst case scenario you could install grub if you want to hate yourself

Is this new for Win 8? Or does Win just play nicely with itself? I know every time I've installed Windows on a dual-booter, it overwrites the MBR and I "lose" the other OS (until I install GRUB).

Would it not be easy if you just installed Win 8 on one while the other is not plugged in?

    windows will overwrite grub

it will overwrite the bootloader even if you install windows side by side, but it will detect the other windows install.

it does not detect anything non windows

Yes I could do that but the idea is to hand both running since I have things installed on the other windows as well.

Again, not what I asked but Windows 8 has some advantages over Windows 7 (not gaming wise) so I'm still deciding which one to install with the new build.

The choice is simple.... Windows 7, no hassle no bugs, everything works. while 8 still has issues and quirks because of metro.

Windows 8 has no issues at all, apart from the new menu. It basically works like Windows 7 on everything, just with quicker boots and shutdowns and a few other things.

I've used the new menu and really don't see what all the fuss is about. Things are just moved around and you use Search more (which I used in Win7 anyway).

Just wanted to give it a good home based test to make sure all my devices work with it.

Yes it will. When you say "recognise" do you mean detect it in order to avoid destroying it? If that then yes it will detect it and only let you get rid of the Windows 7 install you want rid of.

Apparently no one cares about answering questions anymore, only dictating what you should do because they don't agree with it.

I've been using windows 8 since before the consumer preview. It has had nothing but bugs most of which haven't been fixed. Just because I hate something doesn't mean I don't use it, I have extensive experience supporting windows xp, vista, 7 and I have to build my knowledge of 8 as part of my job. I also have extensive experience with OSX 10.5, 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8, not to mention some different linux distros, ubuntu, centOS and redhat.

Out of every OS I just listed, windows 8 is near the bottom in terms of stability.
