I'm going for a book sale tomorrow and I'd like to check out some books based on video games. What are some of the best you've read? I don't mind anything, even Star Wars novels, if any of it is really good. Don't recommend me any Halo books though, I'm not interested in that universe.

The Elder Scrolls Novels (The Infernal City and Lord of Souls) are good, as are the Gears of War books.

Extra Lives (2010) by Tom C. Bissel, its not a novel, it describes why video games matter to Tom from 2005 to 2010 and why he thinks they should matter more.

Not really interested in the Gears of Wars universe but Infernal City looks good. So does Extra Lives. Will keep a look out for them. Thanks.

The Assassin's Creed novels and Halo novels are pretty decent. There's been like 5 Assassin's Creed novels this year including 2-3 new ones

I know you've already done the book sale, OP, but I'd be remiss if I didn't still reply. And you're gonna laugh. The Infinity Blade novella is actually really awesome. It's short and gives a cool backstory to the weird fiction of the iOS game. It's written by Brandon Sanderson, whom I'd never heard of before this, but he's an amazing fantasy-styIe author. If I hadn't read the Infinity Blade story, I never would've read The Way of Kings by Sanderson, which is easily the most original and creative book I've ever read.

The first of a series of Dragon Age games, 'The Stolen Throne' is good. It gives the background of Loghain and King Maric.

Speaking of that Metal Gear Solid novelization, I thought about buying it a couple of years ago but I passed on it. I played the game so many times so why bother buying a novelization of Metal Gear Solid?

Sure I can tolerate novel sidestories of Halo and Assassin's Creed but a wate of money of the novelization of the whole Metal Gear Solid game. nope.

Are the Warcraft novels any good though?

The Star Wars Republic Commando books are rgeat (based on the game in name only, but still worth checking out if you're a Star Wars fan) as are the Zelda Mangas. Also I enjoyed the Dead Space novel.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R., though the game is based on a novel (partly why it's so good), and on a fantastic movie. I guess it's the other way around, a Novel video game .

I thought the same thing back when I was at the store. Still might pick them up though.

Brandon Sanderson actually took over the Wheel of Time series after Robert Jordan died. Check out Sanderson's Mistborn series if you haven't already. Highly entertaining and easily one of the most original fantasy worlds out there.

To the OP, a lot of video game inspired novels are pretty substandard with respect to non-game related books that share their genre. I'm guessing that's largely because they're being published in some cases by game publishers and not book publishers. The Guild Wars books are a great example of ths. I love the GW games (note my avatar) and I think the lore is top notch, but the books are terrible and, in the case of Edge of Destiny, laughable attempts. That being said, the Mass Effect books and the Dead Space book were actually some of the better ones I've read. Those were decent and entertaining enough. The Dead Space book actually has a better story than either of the games.

Yeah, I just finished the first Mistborn book and really liked it. And I started the Wheel of Time years ago and never made it past the second book. At the time, it was just too long, which is funny because I've been reading Brandon Sanderson and George RR Martin lately, and they're not really known for their brevity. But now I read ebooks almost exclusively, so I guess a slowly increasing percentage doesn't intimidate me as much as a giant book with a bookmark that doesn't seem to be moving.

wh40k: dawn of war omnibus and dawn of war II

simply put these are great b/c these generated the game not the other way around which often ends up absolutely ruining the book as it needs to remain relatively linear and expected. DoW the novel is simply timeless. nothing is as awesome as the hall of harelquinns fight or the brawl between the avatar of khaine and the demon prince at the beginning of the book. it starts with a bang and ends with one. and DoWII is no different

Didn't know this thread was still alive, I didn't manage to find any of the books that were recommended before I went (probably cause I went on the last day :p). But there's a lot of interesting recommendations here. I wouldn't mind checking out Assassin's Creed books and The Stolen Throne also would be a good read. I'll keep them in mind for the next book sale. Mainly though I think I'll be looking out for Mass Effect, I really like the universe. Dead Space I never really liked the game so I don't know if I would like it. I don't like the Halo universe, but what is Fall of Reach about? As for The Infinity Blade books, I'll have to read up on the background a little bit to see if I might like it. The same goes for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Anyways, thanks for all the recommendations. I really want to get some game novels so I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for these.
