If funds aren't an issue, why wouldn't you spring for the i7? It won't be any worse.

Depends. In Apple's machines, for instance, it won't make a discernible difference.

Not sure if this thread is mostly directed at the RT version or the PRO. But I was pretty shocked to hear how the RT's been bombing supposedly at retail. Although they had it coming by holding in for Microsoft stores.

It won't make it worse but what possible gains will it give me? Gaming won't help too much, graphics designing, well I don't do that too much anyway. It will make apps and programs load a little quicker, if its $50 difference ill nab it if its >$100 i won't bother

I don't know if there are any promotions in Australia, but here in Canada, Future Shop is giving Microsoft Office free with the purchase (or pre-order) of a Windows 8 ultrabook. They're also giving a free software package with some other programs and a couple games.

Well, the TAICHI 21 is an 11inch ultrabook, so 5 hours is about the most they get.

The TAICHI 31 (13inch) will have 7 hours.

That doesn't sound right at all, the UX21A (same display, Core i5, battery) did much better than that (~4 hours). LINK Anandtech

    EDIT:

CNET's test must be doing something more intensive

MBA 11inch (mid-2012) - 2:24 LINK "for the size it does reasonably well"

The TAICHI with 1 display on - 2:21 "troubling battery life could put even those people off"

and with two displays on - 2:00

Had this been a normal slim notebook made by Microsoft, I would have bought it. But as a tablet, it's too clunky.

From SemiAccurate, talking about the state of Surface tablets and the uneducated view of the product as seen in the OP:

    SemiAccurate wrote:
That superior product explanation seemed plausible if you dont actually parse the information available, and luckily for Microsoft, few did. Then word came from Taiwan that despite selling out, Microsoft had cut their Q4 parts order in half. It was only then that the company admitted the four million units were actually the entire Q4 order that they were hoping to sell. But didnt. Even in spite of most of the competition dropping their, err, competitive product lines in their entirety. No word on returns, or actual sales, not shipments to dealers as some suspect. Surface couldnt meet half of expected demand in spite of Windows 8, Christmas, and fanboi fervor. It is DOA.

That last bit is especially important, because it directly mirrors what I've been saying all along.

    Bad.

You know i meant surface pro but not limited to the surface pro i indiacted that any windows 8 pro device will be great. one just needsto pick the device that suits them best, i am not even considering the surface pro personally, but the Taichi has always been one of my options. Windows 8 pro as a tablet OS is the most ideal OS, Due to here being access to features you can not find in most arm based tablets. I still believe one would get greater value on the 'bad' surface pro than they would on an iPad or android tablet.

I was long debating whether I should get the Nexus 7 or just get a laptop. Ended up getting a Lenovo ThinkPad x120e Netbook/Notebook instead. Now that I have my S3, I barely use my laptop unless I need to do some documentation for classes.

Which leads me to believe my next portable device will probably just be a tablet, with a desktop machine at home for games. I tried out the Surface tablet in Toronto, I have to say it's pretty nice, well build and I like the detachable keyboard. However, I really really don't like Windows anymore. I've been using Ubuntu for about 4 years now and I have no desire to go back. I will say that the Metro UI is better suited for tablets than it is in the desktop environment. Microsoft did a good job with that UI, but I feel like that should have been the entire OS itself, rather than Metro and Windows 8 being the same package.

    $900 DOLLARS FOR A TABLET?!

No wonder why some people here consider this thing a "laptop replacement."

Spending as much as a laptop on an unproven device... For shame.

I'm not really shocked by any of this. Windows 8 is a magnificent operating system but its being handled like its some interns side project or something, rather than one of the most powerful and important operating systems on the planet. Microsoft failed to take heed of the lessons android taught, and now we get to watch this train wreck to completion.

But! I don't think its over.

No matter how you spin it, Microsoft has a mountain of cash at their disposal. They can survive even if windows 8 turns out to be a catastrophic failure, and potentially turn themselves around. Hell, if we are lucky windows blue will be that saving grace. I sure hope it is, because right now its a mess.
