Is it ok for me to be afraid to overclock?

I'm thinking about overclocking my CPU eventually in the future. I have just a stock cpu fan and my cpu is i3 2120 at 3.3 GHz stock and I want to boost it up to possible 3.9GHz. Will my cpu overheat if I keep the stock cpu fan and overclock it? And if it overheats can it be a huge problem for my computer?

You aren't going to get much in the way of overclocking with a non K sandy bridge CPU. You might get a 100-200mhz or so, but that is pretty much it. You won't be getting anywhere near 3.9ghz

Depends a lot on the mobo and RAM.

My motherboard software where I can overclock says I can go up there, but you can be right still.

Ive never heard of anyone getting one of those CPUs even near that high. You can even look at the proffesional reviews from various sites, even then they only get the 2120 to around 3.5ghz.

    1. Don't overclock on a stock headsink unless you have very low temps to start with.

    2. That CPU won't get far.

yeah anything without a k after its name has a locked multiplier. meaning you can only up the core clock at doing so is only a very small difference.

i think the highest ive ever heard of any cpu on air getting using core clock only has been .4ghz faster than stock

is it burned to the board though?

    to be burned on socket

means that the cpu has literally afixed itself to the board

due to some unstable pins on the cpu.

hence when the released core i7 neahelm rev 2.0
