I was wondering how many people play games in order? I have a problem that i have to play the first game before i play the second one and it is starting to get annoying. Does it really matter if you play games in order? Also are there any games that playing in order is necessary?

I like playing them in order. It does get annoying when the new game is all the rage and you want to play it but patience counts. I really like that Sony is releasing all these collections because it gives me a chance to play a series in order that I have missed out on.

Currently playing New SMB U, Black Ops II and ZombiU

It really depends on the game series, and the circumstances surrounding my playing it in/out of order.

I don't presently have an XBox 360. As such, I never played the original Dead Rising. But I really wanted to play the game because it looked like ridiculous fun and I'm just a huge zombie nut, so when I found Dead Rising 2 for the PS3 on sale, I jumped right in and didn't much care that I missed everything that happened in the original. While I'm sure I missed little callbacks to the first game and didn't have as much context to the story in the sequel, I still found it a thoroughly enjoyable game. Of course, it helps that the game/series doesn't really have the deepest of stories.

Another example is Resident Evil. I played (or tried playing, I should say) the first and second. Never beat either of them because I couldn't stand the clunky controls and, quite frankly, found the point-n-click puzzle adventure aspect of the games tedious. Never played the third or any of the numerous side-story games. But I got right back into the game with RE4 and 5. Again, I probably don't get as much out of those games as the hardcore fans who've played every entry and know all the history and back stories of all the characters, but I didn't feel entirely lost playing those later entries.

Or the Killzone series. Didn't play the original. Was only mildly interested in the second one, but never found it cheap enough to make me consider picking it up. But I bought and played Killzone 3 because it had a co-op campaign, and that's all I really wanted: an FPS that offered a co-op campaign. Not an easy find on the PS3. And, again, I was fine playing it out of order, because, again, there isn't really all that deep a story to the game - which I didn't much care about anyway.

However, something like Uncharted or inFamous or Assassin's Creed or God of War? I absolutely felt compelled to play them in order, even though most people would likely argue that the first entry in each of those series is inferior to the second outing and could probably be skipped without losing much. But, for whatever reason, I wouldn't let myself play any of those games unless I played them all in order.

I don't ever feel the need to play in order unless I get the games as they release. Story is an afterthought when I play video games. All I really care about is gameplay so if I want to try out a series some time after it began, I choose the game that's highest regarded from it (Assassin's Creed II, Uncharted 2).

I always play games in order but tend to space them out with other games in between so I don't get too bored with the same gameplay.

Same here. I play games in order even if it's not necessary to enjoy or understand the sequel(s). It's just a pet peeve of mine where I hate jumping in the middle of stuff.

Nope, It doesn't really matter to me playing games in order, though it does bug me sometimes if I spoiler something in a sequel before playing the original, but its not a deal breaker for me.
What usually happens is I suddenly get interested in a game/franchise and buy the latest game and if I like it I'll get the previous installments.

The only one I've skipped is the first "Kane & Lynch" from this gen, I really son't like jumping into the middle unless there's no alternative ("Condemned II" comes to mind). I have ME2, but I'm waiting for two things now, to play it.

    1. An HD TV.

    2. ME1 is on it's way for PS3 users.

Same. You never want to genre fatigue, or gaming burn out. I am supremely excited to play GoWIII, but I still have to play II. I figure I have another 7 months before I see it in action.

    generally go in order.

sometimes I don't for whatever reason, usually cause i skipped the earlier one when it came out and I end up liking the sequel so I'll go back and play the original. I got gears 2 and 3 near their releases and only just got the 1st one.

If it is a series that is already a few games in, there is usually one of the more recent ones that I want to play. If it is only 2 or 3 games in, I will start from the beggining, but any more than that, and I will usually just skip to the one that I want to play the others at my own leisure.

If Im genuinly interested in the narritive, then I start from the begging.

I used to be kind of the same but then I broke the ice by playing AC2 without having played the first. Now I have no issue doing it...

It all depends on what series and how much the story influences the game, like uncharted, i wouldn't dream of playing number 3 before 1 and 2 because it's so story driven, but some games aren't and i don't mind. the one which is confusing is mgs series now that series is very jumbled up luckily i'm old enough to have played mgs1 as it came out and enjoyed it and played each one in order but the truth is mgs should be played before mgs4, but the rest could be played anytime in any order,

I start from the beginning, unless it's a series spanning a few generations of consoles.
