I'm going to be out of town this weekend so I thought I'd get things kicked off a day early so I could take part. Otherwise I wouldn't see the thread until Tuesday.

So after beating Saints Row the Third I haven't touched a console or handheld. Going to be stuck at A-fest this weekend because I love my daughter and she wants to go, but she's not old enough to make the trip alone yet. So I'll be carrying my Xbox and hopefully hooking it up at the hotel room to waste some of the many many hours I'll be stuck away from home by playing Sleeping Dogs or one of a dozen other games I've started and not finished.

As for the past week I've still been dabbling with Defense Grid on Steam a bit. Not too much else really. Some Angry Birds while I was waiting to pick up my daughter from school but I don't think that counts.

Ratchet & Clank Collection for me. The first game is pretty rough going mostly because it lacks strafing and combat turns into an obnoxious kiting affair, but it's still an absolute blast. I think my favourite thing about any of those games is smashing up boxes and the sound and effect of the nuts and bolts as you collect them.

I also realize the first game does sort of allow strafing once you get the jet pack upgrade, but you can't really aim properly when you're going that so it's not as useful as it is in later games. Checkpoints are pretty rough too, and inconsistently so as occasionally one section of a world will give you a couple of checkpoints along the way and other times (most of the time) will simply dump you back at your ship leaving you to do everything all over again. And of course you have to restock ammo because the game isn't nice enough to restore what you had when you first entered the area.

Other than that, maybe some NSMB2, which is fun if unremarkable. I also picked up Lumines for Vita for ten bucks, which seems an appropriate price though I'd sooner have a digital version given the nature of the game. As my first real experience with Lumines, it's fun, but presentation-wise is really goddamn dull. Maybe there are some settings or something.

    So far I prefer Meteos.

Not sure what else. I wouldn't mind trying out The Last Story but I've already packed up my Wii because it's, well, the Wii. I didn't expect to feel like playing anything on it in the immediate future.

Picked up Rock Band Blitz too. It's fun, I like the concept but the coin mechanic almost breaks the game. It makes grinding for coins almost a necessity in the early parts of the game and high score runs will simply bleed you of coins, leaving you to play songs without powerups in order to earn more coins...except a powerup-less run has absolutely no hope of getting a remotely high score. It's an idiotic system that borrows too much from free to play models, only it's not a free to play game. Oh well. Even if it ends up sucking it's still a 25 song pack for $15 that I can play in Rock Band 3, which is still awesome.

I remember going back to replay Ratchet 1 after playing whatever the fourth game was. The combat heavy one that didn't catch on very well. Can't recall it's name, I just remember not caring for it. R&C 2 and R&C 3 are definately where the heart of that franchise lies. I remember finding themgenuinely funny at the time and also well animated and I remember loving the whole world aesthetic. Especially their robots. They all had such character and life to them.

Yeah, I love the design and humour of the games. They're brimming with imagination and (dear god I'm about to say it) whimsy.

The Sly games were fun too but were missing part of the spark Ratchet & Clank had. And Jak, well, second game onward they ended up with a growly emo Jak and a trying too hard comic relief in Daxter. The balance of smart-ass and comic relief worked way better between Ratchet and Clank, to say nothing of Jak's poor ripoff of R&C's weaponry.

And let's not discount the power of Ratchet's ad campaign. The TV spots where they would put R&C weapons in real world situations were great ways to show off the game's sense of humor and style.

I remember Josh pestering me to play some of the Jak games back in the day.

I planned on playing a whole lotta Project DIVA f, but Sony's latest firmware update has complety disgusted me since the PSone update was just a trojan horse to sneak in another new feature to further annoy the hell out of me... locking your memory card to your PSN account forcing you to format it to switch accounts. I can't even begin to tell you how annoyed I was when it told me this. The unit won't even read the card at all (not even screen shots or pictures) if it's linked to another account. I never rooted for the people behind making CFW. But right now I am reconsidering my stance.

Playing an early copy of Mark of the Ninja I got from DefaultPrime.com. I got it to review. The game officially comes out on the 7th. It's made by Klei Entertainment, the same people that did Shank. It's a pretty decent ninja game.

Do not invite me to your union. Doing so will get you ignored.

I picked up Theatrhythm cheap from my Darksiders 2 coupon (which leaves my XL coupon to use in September now on anything $40 or more).

It's fun - awful title, really saccharine and insipid art style, but the gameplay is fun if a bit too easy and grindy. As I play I can't help but wish there was more to the touchscreen inputs or an option to use buttons and a dpad. The only thing that actually makes use of the stylus in any tangible way is sliding the note marker (or whatever it's called) up and down during the field songs.

Also I haven't looked up the character roster to see if Quistis is hidden in there, but I have a feeling she's not and that's criminal.

Theatrhythm becomes painfully hard after you finish every song from the first mode it gives you.

Giant Bomb did a Quick Look for that a little while ago. Game looked amazing. I'll be eager to hear more about it.

Of course SHANK looked amazing and we see where that got us, but still. I liked what I saw of MotN so far.

I already have done the review, but because of the review embargo, we can't post it yet. I can't even do the reader review because since the game isn't launched, there's no option to review the game here at GS. I will say the one major thing that held it back is the lack of enemy variation, but if it wasn't for my lack of time, I would be playing it again, and I don't usually have desire to play games again, even if they were great.

DAMN IT. I'm missing one bloody crystal in the desert in R&C Going Commando.

I'm going to have to come back when I have the rocket boots, I've already scoured the entire thing twice without spotting the missing one and I don't have the patience to do it again. I'm also not looking forward to doing it again in the snowy area.

But the actual gameplay in the second game is SO much better, combat-wise. Some of it also feels dated, as the checkpoints are wonky and some of the bosses need to be cheesed horribly in order to win (let alone even attempting some of the skill points, which almost all of the trophies are tied to).
